Why is this forum becoming a joke !!!

There are, it must be said, a few people who would come seriously unstuck 'down the local' if there (sic) lofty and self-righteous pronouncements were aired face to face.

Oh that's priceless, coming from you

You need to be pretty damned certain the other party gets your particular brand of humour before posting some of your own offerings.

The sooner someone's gender becomes a complete irrelevance to a boating discussion, the better (unless discussing something clearly gender-based, like peeing standing-up on a boat, for example!).

As our planned move onto a boat looms ever nearer, and as a totally inexperienced boater, AND as someone of the female persuasion, I hereby volunteer to experiment with the above scenario and to duly report back my findings.

I say this because so far, although I've avidly read and absorbed a lot of the stuff on here, I don't quite feel able to contribute in any meaningful way. I don't feel oppressed or anything, just that I'm aware that many regulars must be sick to the back teeth of yet more newbie questions.

I'm sure that by undertaking the above experiment I will be furthering the site's depth of knowledge and thus will be welcomed with open arms into the Canal World community.

And BTW, this isn't off topic - the forum's title mentions something about a joke...

Oi Alec - shut it! (doncha just love reasoned argument!)

Hi Cally. Sorry, I beat you to it on that one. Before I'd installed a seat on my compost loo, I experimented with the 'hover-arse'. It's an interesting develpoment in callanetics that strengthens thigh muscles while at the same time ridding you of any control over the urination process.

an interesting development in callanetics

...maybe I could develop a Callynetics system? A combination of yoga postures and waste elimination procedures specially designed for female boaters. Any photos you may have of your techniques would be welcomed, Carrie. I will study them closely for useful hints and tips, and promise not to post them on this website. Honest.

Oops, again. Sorry!

My name, the name of my boat, and where I moor are all freely available. Were then is the baying lynch mob?

Well, judging by the general tenor of some of your posts:

While you take the level of being such a patronising a**ehole to such giddying heights and keep us amused in seeing just how insufferably rude and self congratulatory you can be in your responses - we'll let it run.....

You really should be careful in what you wish for, Mr. Mayall.....

While i dont always see eye to eye with dave's views at least he speaks his mind with conviction and produces throught provoking comment.

To verbally abuse is coming back again to 'if i cant win an argument i'll use force instead'

Priceless!

In a thread whinging about how some posters are frightful and beastly to other posters (rather than accepting that it isn't only the opinions of shrinking violets that are valid), we suddenly find that it is apparently OK to fling abuse at people who dare to have strong opinions, and issue threats.

Had I posted in that tenor, I have no doubt that a small army of the "lets all be really nice to each other" brigade would have been squealing like stuck pigs to the moderators.

I just read Barbara's posting about the macho slant to some discussions. I agree completely but would urge anyone (male and female) to challenge that and not sit back and accept the situation. Allowing that kind of chat to dominate and silence you, means other women get to feel domintaed and silenced too. The sooner someone's gender becomes a complete irrelevance to a boating discussion, the better (unless discussing something clearly gender-based, like peeing standing-up on a boat, for example!). So - let's not talk about working out differences in the pub car-park! Who's for a killer game of chess then?

Have you considered procuring a 'SheWee' as featured on Dragons Den?

Would you care for me to cut and paste some of your truly pompous and propriatorial offerings Moleman.... You are on dodgy ground ;)

I must admit when I put my thread on about the noisey hirer asking to run his engine at 11 (where he didn't and ended up not being noisy as it were), I got a total mixed bag of sweets, but honestly expected nothing less from this lot on here.

What a boring place it would be if you had all nodded in agreement. Whilst I apologised for standing by my convictions, it made for a very interesting discussion, one very worth while having, and was a lot of fun.

Some people on here have very strong opinions are are not afraid to voice them, some will stand by there beliefs no matter what. Don't see anything wrong with that as long as you are prepared to hear things you didn't want to.

I certainly have learned thing or two on here in terms of knowledge, and at the same time learnt to stop being such a wuss and get on with it, and not take everything on here too seriously unless it is in the very very rare occasion a direct personal attack, for which it is dealt with very quickly.

I think group hugs are out of the question (being mostly men and all), but I do think you lot enjoy yourselves and if you did meet in a pub somewhere I can imagine you would end up having a jolly good old time with plenty of the liquid enlightenment.

As someone who spends an unhealthy amount of time arguing, debating or disagreeing with most of Dave's posts, so I've probably read them all, I find your comments offensive and abusive Len.

Just because somebody argues forcibly from a diametrically opposed political or idealogical standpoint does not make them rude or self-congratulatory (arrogant and patronising, maybe, but no more than me).

I do not recall any posting by mayalld that has ever contravened the rules of this forum.

Your post does, imho, by being abusive in your 2nd paragraph and the 3rd carries, if not a veiled threat, then certainly a subtle desire to see harm come to someone.

I'll choose to treat your final paragraph as ironic.

As a bit of a lefty, wishy washy liberal type, I often think (arrogantly, I suppose) that I inhabit the moral high ground.

If that means I'm sharing space with you then I'd rather be down in the gutter with the tories thanks.

My god Simon what have you started?

214 posts in 7 days - you've obviously hit a raw nerve here! ;) And well done for raising the issue.

I've was knocking around on BBS's way before the 'net - and I've been on the 'net all the way through from the very start (who remembers GOPHER, TELNET and Veronica for example?). Initially we all started talking to each other on IRC (for those who remember that!), and then came the development of usenet newsgroups (btw - I was a founding member of uk.rec.competitions which is still the most sucessful non porn newsgroups in the UK!), and later again came web based forums like this...

Though technology has changed beyond recognition in the last quater of a century - one thing that hasn't changed is the folks who post!

It's funny - we used to have these discussions 20 years ago when such posts were called 'flaming' (and probably still are in some obscure corners of the 'net), and unfortunately it's not going to change any time soon. Flaming is a sad fact of life on the net - even in such genteel forums as this. We can all moan about the more contentious posters (you know who you are!!!), but at the end of the day at least every computer has a delete button - pity the same isn't true in real life eh?

You are OK here as long as you are prepared for a bit of flack if:

  • You ask anything about electrics
  • Don't do a seach first before you ask a pretty basic question
  • Mention Lager in the VP
  • Forget that Wooden boats, GRP boats, Cruiser sterns & Galvanic Isolators are religious icons

Other than that, you will be fine.

Edited out the last bit as I was afraid of being ridiculed

Can I add that other taboo subjects should include:

* Continious Cruisers (or continious moorers as they are sometimes known)

* Bridge Hoppers

* Positioning boats in locks

* Taking sides in the Pump Out V. Casette debate

* Anything in praise of BW

Allan

Those that know you know better - Those that don't know you don't matter!

I hear some women like to be dominated, and isnt that peeing standing up referred to as golden showers these days?

I know

Ooh you've got me all nostalgic now.

I too remember the BBS's. A few like minded nerds having the same rows (though not boat related of course).

Then I moved to France and discovered they already had Minitel! An internet type communications system with (potentially) a terminal in every home.

Online shopping, chatrooms, special interest forums (3615ROSBIF was my favourite) and, of course, porn.

I do miss my little beige terminal with it's crap graphics and clicky keyboard:

I must report back to central office that we have a potential new recruit

Come on you little tease, join the tories, you know you want to :(

Ive heard a rumour that in the next manifesto they will be making oak available on the NHS. Still no news on introducing the compulsary hugging law to public areas though

oh pooh! SWMBO just read this and reminded me im not allowed to vote tory ;) ........at least i still got the beard

No you've got it wrong Maverick, it's certain men to whom your above comments apply, in that they seek domination and the other stuff you mention from women.

I keep seeing these "Comrades" mentioned. Who are they? a cruising club or something?

I don't know I always thought it was cugsey's inane attempt at insulting anyone with a view left of centre, but if he's using it to have a go at mayalld then he's aiming at a much wider target.

Are you trying to suggest mayalld is portly comrade?

Not at all brother, I was merely intimating that cugsey's beef must be with everyone left of mussollini (though, now you mention it Dave does look a bit on the chubby side).
