Jrtm
Peacocks chain is plain black twisted links, on both stack and chimney if i remember but def on stack! im aiming to have both as ill have a plain black chimney and a black with brass. I think the traditional (twisted chain) looks best but at the same time makes it look like youve not tried if you catch my drift.

I had to cut it to get the length right and it needed small bolt croppers to cut the chain. Also it hasn't tarnished as quickly as pure brass would. It will do me though. A man chasing a dog up the tow path wouldn't notice!

I had something similar when I worked on the boats, but I only used it when the weather was consistently bad - and eventually corrosion won, but with yours being keenly priced it would be economic to simply replace with another

jake_crew
You can blacken chrome chain by leaving it in strong acid for a bit.

I believe that early chimney chains pre WWII came from horse equipment as of course brasses. I was beaten to it suggesting blacking a chain, but: http://www.blackfast.com/metal-blacking http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Blacken-Steel-with-Motor-Oil/ http://metalblacking.solutions/default.aspx

koukouvagia
Just to complete my search for twisted link chimney chain. I bought a 24" choke chain https://goo.gl/ubn9ux (Amazon link) and sprayed it with Halford's enamel spray adhesion promoter, followed by matt black. It's as near as I can get to the original chain. Mike Pinnock is going to make me a replica chimney. So Bob's your uncle.

Nice my only other advice was to have a chain maker make some, im going to have a word with bclm might be able to sort something... There is a guy at the braunstone boat show that makes chimneys proper riveted ones can do any style or size think he wanted about £100 for a custom size black one for me using my brass. I think I may have some chain like that on a rat trap somewhere but I doubt it would be long enough to be much use.

Based on what he tried to do with the GWR, he would have built 10 foot wide narrow boats long after everybodu else in the country had standardised on 7 feet, then struggled on with it for years before it finally got abandoned.
