To float, or not?

Another electrical question I've been pondering on.  All the external regulators make a big thing about maximising the charge then dropping back to a float voltage of say 13.2 - 13.8.  If the internal regulator is set to 14.4v, is it that much of a problem if it continues to charge at that rate for a couple of hours or so when the (sealed) batteries are fully charged (<1% capacity)?

My current lot of sealed batteries have a label on them saying "Charge voltage 14.2 - 14.8V, Float voltage 13.2 - 13.4V", these being "calcium technology" sealed batteries.

It depends on how long you continue charging at the higher rate. If it’s an hour a day then that’s not going to matter a great deal. If it’s hours and hours then it could be more of a problem. The danger with wet sealed batts is that they’ll vent off some water vapour which, because they’re sealed, can’t be replaced. Wet open batts can simply be topped up. AGMs don’t seem to mind it much.
