Can't cruise as they've closed a lock!

oooh  you are so observant and clever! :D Spell checkers do exactly that, no heart and soul, but then again it probably was a viscous circle, stuck in a never ending bog of really good vodka (dunno what the viscosity of vodka is).

Scottish beer is sometimes still sold in "Shillings" so why not do the same same in England (by viscosity),  I'll have a pint of that 40 second winter ale please?

I quite like chess but the problem I find is, I just can't be bothered to muster the brain power to think four moves ahead. 'After all its only a game', I keep finding myself thinking whilst pouring another good scotch. Very viscous.

Besides, you're playing it wrong drinking vodka!

Dave, I remember we had a very pleasant time by Appley Lock, lock 91. How's your chess coming on?

To the OP, it's a nice spot by that lock and only half an hour walk to Parbold for supplies. So I'd spend a fortnight there, then go back to the previous lock where you can fill with water, stay for fortnight, then back to 91 for a week. It's a half hour cruise between locks so no big deal on fuel.

Both locks have a small arm either side where you can sit out of the way.

Use your free time to catch up on further stoppages. Enjoy.

There's an hourly bus service from Appley Bridge. It's route 312/313 (Appley Br / Skelmersdale / Parbold / Burscough) and is run by Preston Bus.  Skelmersdale has the Concourse shopping centre, including a big Asda, and Burscough has a Tesco store.

Previous lock is Dean Lock (90) but I wouldn't want to spend much time there. It's directly under the M6 at Gathurst Viaduct between J26 & J27.

Dean lock is lovely, M6 is so very high it does not intrude, it really is a magical spot, and an interesting pub in the train station too.

Never mind the shops, Railway pub at Parbold is great, and for those that need it a very very good vet too. And from Parbold a direct train to Southport.

I think we played 5 games and Goliath won 3, that means I won 2 (and I had not played for over 20 years), Vodka played a huge part in my victories (because my rather good chess playing opponent was drinking more than me). With a sober opponent I would have been stuffed.

Which spirit do you suggest for playing chess......and when shall we do it???

I happen to prefer draughts actually, as despite initial appearances it is a very strategic game.

I was curious when playing Gilly back in summer in the Black Swan how the board curiously fell off the table, I still felt she was well in with a chance of winning!

I like the word 'curious'.... :)

P.S. this Whispergen is great. I've just started charging my batteries and no-one knows I'm doing it. Yay!

Maybe I'll play chess with the OP, and teach him to think 4 moves ahead.

And whatever Dave says I let him win. :)

Does 28 sec relate to the time it takes to drink a pint, and 35 sec how long to drink a litre  ?

I always assumed it was how long a pint of lager took to reach the other end (bitter seems to take longer)

I’m reliably informed that the chillers can be blamed for that.

No, its to do with the age of your seal. The seal weakens as you get older so can't hold back as much liquid as it used to. :P

We all get like that.

Our favoured pub entertainment is BackGammon and this is always played on the iPad, that way no matter how drunk one gets you can't drop all the little pieces on the floor. Might investigate playing draughts on the iPad too but do think that chess should be played on a real board with real men (sorry, people).

A couple of the chess games were pretty close, it was my ability to consistently make stupid mistakes that gave Goliath the upper hand. Trouble with Monopoly is that it becomes clear who is going to win in the first 5 minutes but then it takes an hour for the defeat to run its course.

Dead right ! ....temperature is critical ! ice-cold beer will have a high viscosity and difficult to down a pint in one quick go...I prefer warm beer myself

....try changing the Tax Demand  just after GO to a Refund - that speeds the game up, and get in jail - that stops you paying rent...!

...and add a few extra cards of your own wording to Chance - to tip the balance between the 'haves and have-not's.

...then print some more money... and you might have to pop out to the workshop to make a few more hotels !

Surely Monopoly is a game designed to teach people the benefits of property dealing and capitalism in general, these suggestions sound dangerously close to socialism to me  :D

oooh I quite like this idea, off to the patent office right now.   look out for social housingopoly in the shops this Christmas

When I was about 10 I played a lot of Monopoly with a like minded friend.

Once, to avoid the pain of landing on a fully hotel'd up Mayfair, we came up idea to allow the rent to be paid in installments,  and then wondered why the game was still going a week later...

But that's better than that gland swelling so that the flow is reduced to a dribble, reducing available drinking time...

Many years ago, in a previous life as a biology teacher, I invented (but didn't patent, dammit!) a game called 'Guts', which involved travelling through the digestive system.  It was very popular with students, but no matter how good you were, you couldn't finish unless you threw a number 2.......
