Bad Fishermen

On the other bank the maggots lie doggo in the tin waiting for the lid to be left off and the angler to nod off, when they then leap quietly out to escape along the towpath away from death by horrific, barbarous, slow torcher and murder by head puncturing and drowning, by their dreaded enemy, the angler.

When I went down there a few years ago, there was no way of actually mooring to the dock outside the Red Lion and I was told by someone there that it was purely a facility for fishermen. So he may well have believed it, and it may even have ben true once upon a time.

Are there now bollards or mooring rings on the dock? Because there weren't when I was there.  The pub was also seriously dodgy but i gather it's improved a lot since.

This is as it was when I was there. I see now there are two bollards at the far end, where the broken down boat is.  There was nowhere else to tie to - I think I shoved a rope between a couple of broken planks.  Someone told me it was there for fishermen not boats.  The CRT sign wasn't very informative and didn't say it was a recognised CRT mooring at that time, but it's definitely now marked on my map as one.  The "Welcome" sign in the pic above certainly wasn't there then and I shoved off to Vale Royal as soon as I could as it felt pretty unfriendly.

The "Welcome" sign in stone has gone. There are real proper mooring bollards, nice big jobs not the usual little CaRT things. There is a CaRT noticeboard. The pub is now excellent, but has been good for several years, its run by a small local chain who specialise in rescuing failed pubs and turning them into good community pubs. I have been here several times before and have never been the only boat on the mooring.

It quite possible that he actually believes this to be the case

Yes, he did sound like he believed this, and said it was written on his fishing permit. I have had a couple previous of run-ins with fishermen who have told me to stop the boat because the canal is closed for a fishing match and they also gave the impression that they believed it. Its worrying because it suggests that more experienced/senior/deluded/naughty members of the clubs tell the other members that this is the case.

well to be honest none of you really believe that to be a place to fish ...theres  not a fishing club in the land that would build such landings like those to fish from ...crt put no fishing allowed ..it dont stop them ...maybe the older ones yes but you try telling three 16/18 year olds excuse me your  not to fish there ...

I boat and I fish. I am very rarely miserable. Have to say I find some of the above posters views to be rude.

Ian.

Cyclists, boaters, anglers .... there are good ones and bad ones of all these groups, we can't tar them all with the same brush.

I don't think I have encountered more than a couple of grumpy fishermen this year.

I think that depends on where you have been. K&A fishermen have the highest proportion of grumpy and sometimes quite unpleasant individuals. Birmingham and the Black country has the happy ones. :D

There are lots and lots on the Weaver, most have been neutral, a few friendly, just the one bad'un.

One of the fishing type things that I find curious is the amount of gubbins that some fisherpeople find necessary in the pursuit of their art.  Some need four wheeled trolleys and others not much more than a rod and a carrier bag.  Is the catch weight a function of the kit weight?

I noticed up here that quite a few have electrically assisted trolleys, looks like they might be variants on the electric things that some golfers use.

Thinking about it golf and fishing have a lot in common, moving a lot of equipment about and not doing much else :D

I wonder if they discuss batteries on fishing forums as much as boaters discuss them on boating forums?

Do they discuss fishing and boating on battery forums?

The prime and most important accessory amongst the huge cargo they trundle along to their fishing pitch these days must be an adjustable commode, because I've seen em sat fishing like a graven image for hours and hours on end without shifting from the spot at all. For number 1's I suspect they have a receptacle like a milk bottle  fixed onto their willie or one of those what they called the ''Car John'' tied on it which used to be advertised in the Exchange & Mart and News of the World for the incontinent.  But for number two's it must be either a commode or a big nappy, it simply must be. They couldn't hold it for that long surely.  Or maybe its the reason why some wear big waterproof trousers tucked into high Wellington boots and have to stand up and do a little jig now and then

On second thoughts. The ones you see fishing with ordinary shoes on or just wearing shorts and a string vest probably either went on a long hunger strike days before their fishing expedition or ate nothing but eggs, eggs and nothing but eggs for ages before to severely constipate them. Sometimes they errect that enormous umbrella and huddle under it, even when its not raining, which is a bit suspicious.  Sometimes you see a toilet roll peeping out of their kit which they claim is for handling slippery eels and roach, hmmm, a likely story.
