Thankfully we didn't really like them anyway. Anybody know what would be involved in getting them cut off? I'd like to think this was a relatively simple job that would be no more expensive than getting one repaired, but I don't know if it's something just any old boatyard could do or if it's more of a specialised, steelwork job.

There is a boat yard a short way from the end of the tunnel at Longport, that is the south end, I am sure they would have them off in less than an hour

I think you are confusing your tunnels Longport is some distance from Standedge especially so when Marple Locks are closed  :-)

Thanks all. Sounds like it's DIY-able in theory, but I hate DIY at the best of the times and the hacksaw-and-file option sounds like bloody hard work if I'm honest! A boatyard taking them off in an hour sounds good though. Might ask a few locally. No hurry I guess.

Can't you just go through Standedge Tunnel again, that should complete the job (maybe not very neatly though)

It's a technique we've employed previously... Couldn't get the chimney off our old boat for toffee (think it had been painted on, basically), and decided in the end to let a low bridge do the job!

Your right again and yes I am slightly off course, not sure I should admit to being wrong.

Never admit to being wrong unless you are a woman, because even when a woman is wrong she is always right, so the wife tells me.

Just got rid of my cursed taff seats with the aid of a very cheap grinder from Aldi. Cutting discs then a grinder one to level off. Touch up the paint and jobs a good un. My breather is in the dolly on one side. Wouldn't have wanted to do it with a hacksaw.

Don't forget to clean off the swarf otherwise you will have a rust attack
