Sorry if this has been posted before, if so I have missed it. Some small changes to the alert system on the Great Ouse - it's important to register for this if you are using the Ouse or the Nene.

River Advice for Boaters for the River Great Ouse is changing

The information you receive about river conditions on Anglian Waterways River Great Ouse between Bedford and Earith is changing.

From Monday 16th October, any updates about this stretch will always be sent to you in two notifications: one for Bedford to St Ives, and one for St Ives to Earith. Currently, you receive just one notification covering Bedford to Earith.

Depending on the conditions, our free River Advice for Boaters service will send you one of the following messages for each stretch:

  • NOT IN FORCE – There are currently no CAUTION or STRONG STREAM ADVICE messages in force.
  • CAUTION – River flows are above normal and headroom at some sites may be restricted. Anyone intending to navigate should proceed with extreme caution.
  • STRONG STREAM ADVICE – Locks along the river may be closed to navigation. We strongly advise against attempting to navigate. River flows are above normal, too fast for safe manoeuvring, and headroom at some sites will be restricted. Boats should be moored properly to accommodate changing river levels.

You can call Floodline on 0345 988 1188 at any time for an update using the relevant quick-dial number:

  • Bedford to St Ives: 033211
  • St Ives to Earith: 033212

If Floodline states that there are no messages for that code, then there are currently no CAUTION or STRONG STREAM ADVICE messages in force.

Do I need to do anything?

No. If you are currently signed up to receive River Advice for Boaters messages for the River Great Ouse between Bedford and Earith, you will automatically receive both sets of messages in the future.

Can I choose to receive messages for only one of the areas?

It is important that you continue to receive advice for the whole length of river, from Bedford to Earith. Therefore, you will receive both messages; you cannot chose to receive just one.

Where can I get further information?

Our Floodline phone number remains the same: 0345 988 1188. Choose the options for river information for boaters and, when prompted, enter the quick dial number(s) for the area(s) of the river you want to hear about. We will also be displaying information on our noticeboards at our lock sites and providing updates for river user groups, marinas and boat clubs.

You can view further information by searching for Floodline on our website www.gov.uk/environment-agency.

What do the messages displayed at the locks mean?

When we are displaying Strong Stream Advice boards at locks, we strongly advise against attempting to navigate. River flows are above normal, too fast for safe manoeuvring, and headroom at some sites will be restricted.

When we are displaying Caution boards at locks, we are advising that river flows are above normal and headroom will be restricted at some sites for a time. Anyone intending to navigate should proceed with extreme caution.

To stop receiving these emails you can manage your account online, please phone Floodline on 0345 988 1188 or log onto the Flood Warning System at www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings.Please do not reply to this email.
