I'v been on the Ashby for two weeks and it's been quiet.

This morning I've seen more boats than in the last 14 days combined.

What's happening?

Went past Ashby boats on Saturday, they only had one boat moored, all the rest were out still.

I think more people are staying out/ hiring longer as the last couple of years have seen decent weather through October.

Was lovely though at 7am Sunday, nice cruise to snarestone and moored there for two weeks now.

Mount Judd, isn't it, as in spoil from Judkins' Quarry? Unless that has now been flattened.

They have/are building on Judkin's Quarry now.

So probably no longer active.

Zenataomm was referring to Griff Colliery I think.

They had to stop making Mt Judd any higher during the last war as it was becoming an obstruction to the bombers taking off from what is now MIRA.

Nope, it’s still a huge hole in the ground which is gradually being filled with landfill from the council ‘rubbish tip’. In due course they intend to landscape it and make it into a park. It will be very many years before they would be able to build on it.

They have definitely built houses between the hole and the canal before you get to the high metal bridge when heading towards Hawkesbury.

As you leave Nuneaton towards Cov/Ashby/Oxford the canal bends to the left and the remains of the Griff arm can be seen to your right, as used to serve Griff Colliery.

They built over the road, next to the quarry, there was talk some years ago about turning the quarry into a canal basin, but of course houses bring more money for the council.

The main juddkins quarry lies empty, they did start filling with household waste but for some reason stopped.

Mount Judd as we call it, will always be there, i think there would be an outcry if they tried to removed it.

That’s previously waste ground but not part of the quarry.

How on earth did they get it up there?

Carried it, it was only the shell of one side, very lightweight

One Easter someone put a large cross on the top.

Remember red nose day, think it was 1990, they drove a big tipper up and painted the front end red.
