Ah, so the man who wasn't there on the stair also sold the world.

I didn't know that. Just shows that every day is a school day. :D

He wasn't there again today.

As it happens , yours is a direct quote from Mearns whereas mine is a misquote

I found this parody

As I was falling down the stair
I met a bump that wasn't there;
It might have put me on the shelf
Except I wasn't there myself

I sailed along without a care

and met a boat that wasn't there

always cruising, always moored

and twice as wide as some I'm sure

I can not sail without a care

Because of that boat, which isn't there...

Brilliant. And so true.

I have recently been hearing a radio ad for some new vehicle with this automatic braking in case "the car in front gets too close".

Another stupid invention on a par with reverse parking sensors, how to ensure a bad driver becomes even worse and has a definite accident when the stupid gimmick fails.

Yes they are up there in the realms of usefulness with the likes of........Bowthrusters, Pram hoods, Eco fans and snake oil.

Er, aren't they supposed to help you miss them? Or do you mean that they don't "see" them, so the driver doesn't miss them?

I’m guessing the latter and I can confirm that this is the case :(

Oi watch it, I'm very happy with my Eco fan and have been since I bought it over 4 years ago.

When the Eco fan stops it indicates the damper needs opening....10 minutes ago

When the Eco fan stops working it means your fire went out over an hour ago.

Thank you Mrs Melly

Reverse parking sensors - wonderful

Bowthrusters - what a cop out! .....only for girls!

Pram Hoods - wonderful, but SWMBO thinks ours is c**p and wont let me put it up

Eco fans - just thinking about buying one

Snake oil - I used to sell it in the 80's.

Go for this instead....?  I use one and they do move the warmth when the stove is hot. Vulcan stirling engine.  Mine goes quite a bit faster as I run our stove quite hard.

I hope you have the matching chocolate fireguard for safety?

I have one of these and it is a delightful thing to have chuffing away on the stove.

Sadly mine barely runs now, requiring a far higher stove temperature than the ecofan (geniuine) sitting next to it. It's rather perplexing as the bearings in it run as freely as ever and I can figure out what has changed.

It's five or six years old now and I might take it back to the factory in Maidenhead for an opinion. They are a proper engineering firm proud of all their products and I was treated to a guided tour of the whole factory when I first called in there to buy it.

Perhaps if you take your two dodgy smartgauges back to the factory in person, they too will give you a guided tour:)

Where is it? I drive all over the south of the UK for work.

I'll perhaps try it and report the results of my visit back to the board.
