LLANGOLLEN CANAL IS STAR OF BBC COUNTRYFILE MAGAZINE 10th  ANNIVERSARY ISSUE

The Llangollen Canal, one of Britain’s most spectacular waterways, takes centre stage in BBC Countryfile Magazine’s 10th anniversary issue, with a feature on a canal boat family holiday by presenter John Craven.

Cared for by the Canal & River Trust charity, the 46 mile Llangollen Canal made the perfect setting for an ‘exhilarating’ short break aboard a canal narrowboat enjoyed by John and his grandsons.

The waterway straddles the border between England and Wales and features the stunning 11 mile World Heritage Site around the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct – Britain’s tallest aqueduct - also looked after by the Trust.

A veteran supporter of the waterways, John said he thoroughly enjoyed his boating break.  He summed up the experience in the BBC Countryfile magazine:

“It had been an exhilarating, slow-motion few days. We had glided though breath-taking countryside while being overtaken by walkers and their dogs, joggers, cyclists and kayakers – canals aren’t just for narrowboats.

“Many peaceful hours of travelling had been dotted with moments of tension, certainly on my part, as I tried to master the skills needed for a method of transportation that hasn’t changed in centuries. We agreed it had been far more than just a short holiday. The Llangollen Canal had given us an experience we’d never forget.”

Wendy Capelle, local Canal & River Trust waterway manager, said: “The Llangollen Canal is one of the most popular canals on our 2,000 mile national waterway network. Every year thousands of boaters, walkers and holiday makers visit us to enjoy the stunning scenery and marvel at the incredible aqueduct.

“We’re delighted John and his grandsons had a great time. We hope Countryfile’s viewers and readers appreciate his feature and feel inspired to follow in his footsteps.”

The BBC Countryfile’s 10th anniversary issue goes on sale on 29 September. For more information about the Llangollen Canal, check out the Canal & River Trust website www.canalrivertrust.org.uk.
