beerbeerbeerbeerbeer
Been meaning to post about Skipton for awhile because it's lovely. Good shops and especially good pubs (some of the best). Week day and weekend markets. Extremely friendly. Can't fault it. Even got a castle with lovely walks behind. I read on here about trouble with youth but I had no trouble whatsoever and couldnt have felt safer. If you aint been, I thoroughly recommend it. The Leeds Liverpool in general is a must see. The Pennines and Yorshire Dales are spectacular.
D. W. Walker
Couldn't agree more with OP above, brilliant place! Just don't try taking a boat longer than about 20' up the Skipton arm, underneath the castle, unless you are really good at reversing! Pubs are mostly dog friendly and serve fantastic beer - is there anything better than a pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord drunk only a few miles from where it is brewed? I bet you been to the Old Brown Cow ( i think its called) in Bingley? A Taylor pub with all their ales on in perfect condition.

Nightwatch
We spent sometime in the Skipton area last year. Throughly enjoyed our time there. Met, advised and helped a nice lady but being so helpful in this instance wasn't for the best. Anyway, would still look forward to going to Skipton in the future. Tim, we can't afford a full boat,so can still visit the whole system.

peterboat
I pop in to visit Skipton when going to Scotland really like the place. I got there by boat in the 80s nearly made it again a few years ago, but a big do involving drink food and music at Saltair stopped us
Albion
Shssshhh, I wish you lot would keep quiet as you are likely to attract even more visitors to overrun where I live and drink all my beer, and there are many better beers than Landlord in Skipton I can assure you. dmr
So just how good are these pubs in Skipton?, would it be worth buying a second "less than whole" boat to go there? ..............Dave

Nightwatch
I found,it wasn't lost, a, I think there're called micro pubs, down a side street. Fantastic. A dozen people in there and it's full. An excellent range of beers. My first, not my last, pint of Rev James was had there. And many other choices. Had to go back to get to the end of the row of beers.
beerbeerbeerbeerbeer
I think there are 3 (or 4) that call themselves micro pubs and my favourite was 'early doors'.
Peter Thornton
We will be there tomorrow! Mooring in Gargrave tonight having just come off the Summit. A fantastic stretch from Burnley to Gargrave, can't believe how quiet it is, surely the best kept secret of the system? Need to be careful in the locks though, two sinkings in the Gargrave and Bank Newton ones in the last two weeks and we came upon an ambulance at the last Gargrave lock taking a lady to hospital who had slipped and broken her shoulder. Hasn't put us off, but you do have to keep an eye on the boats at all times if you're on the paddles.
Señor Chris
I liked the record shop that sold real ale from a bar at the back. If it wasn't busy, you could choose the music from whatever was available on the shelves.
beerbeerbeerbeerbeer
Yes, take it steady and enjoy. Beautiful scenery. Early Doors just specialises in selling all their beer at a lowish price (£2.80 IIRC). It is price that drives what they sell. It is up for sale I believe. The best micro pub in Skipton, IMO, is the Beer Engine.......5 real ales on constantly. Then there is the Sound Bar, specialising in playing vinyl records at high volume in the evening and recently sold I understand. I don't believe from what I have been told that it has a cellar and so some people criticise it for not keeping the ale at the correct temperature. Then you have the Boat House (part of Pennine Cruisers) quite a decent range of real ales there. Roger Edited September 20, 2017 by Albion
beerbeerbeerbeerbeer
Yes the beer engine is ace. early doors has just gone through its take over, I believe. And will stay the same Whats good about them, for me, is they just sell beer. (And cider at the engine).
