STARTED PAINTING - HELP PLEASE!!

Featured Posts

Hi everyone, started painting our Springer Waterbug using Tekaloid Paint from Smith & Allan.

Only done the roof with undercoat and whilst it looks reasonable, not sure about the paint?

After about four or five strokes the foam roller just collapses, the foam falls to bits and comes

away from the roller itself! The rollers are from b&q, should I use high density foam rollers?

If this is just the start, what's the gloss going to be like?? Should I be using a high quality brush instead?

Any comments greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone, Fozzi.

The Tekaloid paint clearly does not like rollers, which are not recommended for application by Smith and Allan. May I suggest that you try applying it with a good quality brush, I wouold recommend Purdy brushes, not cheap but probably the best brushes available.

I have found the B and Q rollers absolutely hopeless as well. If you want a good quality brush for not too much money the Wilkinson own brand 'expensive' ones are excellent, especially for a smooth gloss finish.

Hi Guys, thanks for the quick response. Jonathan, apart from Smith & Allan, any ideas who else may have these short nap rollers?

Maybe a B&Q or Homebase job?

Meanderingviking - thanks for the Wilkos tip, some good reviews on their website, although may take a lot longer with a brush!

Thanks again guys.

There are 2 types of rollers as far as I am aware, emulsion rollers and acrylic rollers and I assume it is the emulsion rollers you are using which are not the correct choice for acrylic paint ?

I had the same happen to me when I first started painting my boat.

When I applied epoxy to my water tank I used solvent resistant rollers from toolstation, maybe worth a try, but depends upon how aggressive your paint is.

I think it was these, though it was over a year ago I bought them.  https://www.toolstation.com/shop/Painting+%26+Decorating/d150/Rollers+%26+Poles/sd3171/Rota+Solvent+Resistant+Roller+Sleeve/p45894

  • 2 weeks later...

Another very good brush is to be found in the Wickes Master range.

I used xylene based paint (referred to as "acrylic" but nothing like the modern water based paints) and it seemed to me that it was like cellulose (at least, the thinners seemed like cellulose thinners) but the rollers I had, came from the same place as the paint so they were fine - I had two different types if I remember but they gave more or less the same finish.
