So, our day got off to an nteresting start when a mobile crane and a low loader turned up to take away a 70 footer moored adjacent to us. Crikey, these blokes have the job weighed off!

The boat came in yesterday and was left with no-one aboard - the roof furniture in place, catch cover and pram cover erected, satellite dish still mounted. The Tuckey team sorted all that out in a jiffy, although it was clear that is not how they expect to find a boat ready to be transported by road. Once prepared, the strops were on, the boat in the air and carefully secured on the low loader in minutes.

I've ofter seen AB Tuckey recommended on here and, whilst I don't expect they're the cheapest boat moving outfit, I'd be surprised if there's anyone better. I was certainly impressed and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them from what I saw.

Fair report.

As you say, while if your prepared to hunt around, know what you're doing and can oversee it, I'm sure there are other options, but I'm sure that the experience that a company who specialises in narrowboats must help at times.. can't comment on price as I have never looked into it at all.

It would be interesting to see the inside when it arrives at the other end, or did they pack all that as well?

Well, either they thought the pram cover was good for 56mph down the M40 and probably thought the wine glasses would be ok too... or they didn't give anything much thought! :D

Having, courtesy of BW, been transported by Tuckey's twice between Milton Keynes and Aylesbury I can say that everything was fine.  We cleared the roof externally as I didn't want to lose a shaft, but packed up nothing internally, beyond the normal way we put the mugs and glasses away.  If they can stand the uphill GU locks without ropes a bit of the Leighton Buzzard bypass isn't going to worry them and 56mph on the M40 is almost motionless to the stuff inside.

Not sure I'd want to be in an accident with 20 tons of narrowboat at even 30 mph though.

with suitable angles, that might be one way of getting a boat onto the Litchfield Aqueduct?

They crane regularly from Willowbridge Marina where I live and it always amazes me how professional and efficient they are.  The mobile cranes they have are incredible bits of kit.

It was another crane company that moved our freshly built boat from the workshop where it was finished to the canal a few miles away but I was equally impressed by the operation, even in confined circumstances. At one end kit was not helped by a car left parked where is should not have been! They worked around it, unfazed. There seems to be quite a bit of technology in those cranes, not to mention skill in the operators.

AB Tuckey have moved 4 boats for me, including 2 at once on one occasion, one of which weighed 23 tonnes. Couldn't find a thing to fault on any occasion and if ever I need a boat moved again I wouldn't consider anywhere else.

i did check prices every time and they weren't expensive. I am sure you could get cheaper by organising cranes etc yourself but I'd rather use a company that obviously know what they are doing.

The most interesting part of the Crick show, is the unloading/loading of the boats that arrive by lorry.

The fuss free way the lifts go, the balance achieved, first time by eye, is a joy to behold. (Very few boats arrive with "strop here" markings)
