Well its another Sabb- a 30 hp 2J-HR- but inside which is even pornier I reckon :D

1st pic engine in situ but with fuel pump cover removed, heads, pistons and rods removed etc .Two round holes in the centre are where the fuel pumps fit into and are driven straight off the camshaft.

2nd pic shows the inside of the fuel pump cover- governer top left and lift pump bottom right with fuel pumps and mechanism in centre. No need to readjust anything- remove fuel pipes and it just unbolts and bolts back on. Brilliant!

3rd pic showing pistons and rods- the big end shells on these engines are an impressive 10mm thick! Well it impressed me anyhow.

I have my first boat, it has a Bukh 10hp single pot diesel. Even for a narrowboat I think it's slow......old ladies pushing zimmer frames walk past me on full throttle

And I discovered why theres a full size set of ear defenders in the cupboard. I'm in the process of sound deadening the engine bay...

Since this thread is developing into a "who's got the biggest pistons?" contest, I thought I'd post the ones from a Kelvin. :P

Lol I think the piston from my dead Skandia beat 'K' series Kelvin pistons. About 9" in diameter and 12" tall, cast iron and almost too heavy to pick up. I took a photo but can't find it now.

On a related front, I am now the proud owner of a lovely K2 and well as a K1 :)

Here is Resolute's J3. A modest bit of grunt...

I know I am showing my ignorance here, but I know almost nothing about Kelvin engines apart from the fact that I believe they are all Diesels. I notice that your engine has spark plugs , does that mean it is petrol start with changeover to diesel when hot.

The farm where I used to help out when I was a boy, had an old Fordson tractor which started ( often failed to start!!) on petrol and changed over when hot, except that it was paraffin rather than diesel

See post 17. Kelvin made more petrol paraffin engines than they did diesels and continued to do so until I believe the late sixties. They are well engineered reliable and so quiet. The F4 in the photograph produces 30 H.P. at 700 RPM albeit from 6 litres. It has considerably more torque than many traditional boat diesels and is so, so quiet. Tom posted a video clip on you tube of an F2, admittedly with rudimentary silencing and that has, as you would expect,  half the power at the same revs. We have a number of these beautiful engines and are in the process of developing a cold start on paraffin adaptation. If you search for a video of Joel you will see an exceptional boat powered by an exceptional engine HughC.

The J3 in our boat was a petrol start as originally configured. The idea was to allow hand starting with no more effort than starting a car with a handle. We had a starter ring fitted to the flywheel and used a starter motor from the beginning. Magneto problems, with expensive solutions, prompted the conversion to diesel start using glow plugs fitted to the air intake. Dick Goble, the Kelvin guru, gave much advice with this. To be honest, I'm not sorry to be without the petrol start.

I,ve been trying to shoehorn this little baby into Alchemy but its too heavy as is. I suppose i,ll have to remove some pistons first. I think its 12 litres all up but developed a bit of a wine. Story of my life : piston broke !
