Hi, we on way to chester for a few days, anyone any tips, advice? We have been told not to moore outside due to yobs etc. Thinking about going into 'basin'?? do you have to book, any charge, how long can you stay, is it safe? We know we have to go through  locks, not bothered about that.. Any advice welcome thanks in advance.

Telford Basin is fine and there are also good moorings in the town before you get there ; 48 hrs if memory serves me right and not bookable. There are also good moorings near the Cheshire Cat pub above the town before any of the locks. It's well worth a trip up to Ellesmere Port and the museum where there are also good visitor moorings.

There are plenty of moorings in Chester either on the towpath before Northgate Locks or in the basin below them. Telfords Warehouse is a music pub - we managed a good blues night last year and the food and beer were good as well. There are restricted moorings outside Waitrose - 2hr from memory and a Tesco near the other moorings above the locks. A great place to spend a couple of nights.

+1 to rgreg, we did that section a few months ago, didn't really see anywhere I thought unsafe to Moore, we moored opposite the aldi, near water tower IIRC, on way in to Chester, approx halfway between Chester and Ellesmere Port and in Chester TC, no issues at either place, a nice journey.

Enjoy

I would try and get in before the locks.   In June we made the mistake of going down and found the basin full.   We managed to squeeze in just down from the basin but there are no rings/bollards.  Any further on and it's difficult to get into the side.  We had similar issues at Ellesmere Port and we're not deep draughted, it may have been water levels were particularly low.

Moored in town and in the basin there and back on a trip to Ellesmere Port earlier this summer. Perfectly fine. As with all town and city centres a good nights sleep is more likely on a school night with fewer drunks around in the early hours. Unless you plan to be one of the drunks of course.

Earlier in the trip was moored in Huddersfield near Apsley Basin on the evening that their football team won promotion to the premier league. Happy drunks singing and car horns blaring till the early hours! Couldn't begrudge that.
