Over the years this challenge has been run. Is there an overall winner for the most points accrued? That is to say every year there is a winner, but for this time it would be nice to know the best ever!

Each year the scoring/point system changes, so not sure if finding the highest points gained would prove the best ever winner

A highest score of 700 one year might not be comparable with a highest score of 500 another year. (I think)

I understand it changes each year to improve fairness and to encourage the reworking or replanning of successful routes, and therefore encourage more and different parts of the BCN to be explored.

But it would be interesting to have some figures from over the past 50 years. And just to see names of boats too. Which has competed the most times etc

see which winner had the biggest lead between them and second?

see how often Tawny's come first and Clarries's come last?

I'd like to know who was speeding? Should be named and shamed. Ha ha. I wonder if they can hold the title for disqualification ?

The (2017) scores are in!

(Now where have we heard that before? )

I still reckon there should be a prize for coming second last.

I mean any pillock can come last (no offence intended Laurie!) but to come second last require great skill and judgement.

I mended Panatha today, they are usually very competitive. Last year, their engine mounts broke

So the planning sheets and rules are available, I better get our form sent in then!  Last year we were supposed to be taking it easy, then we accidentally came second.  OK we clearly had a good plan which is no accident, as we have good software (if I do say so myself!) and a good database of our actual times.

No triple rated sections this year but there is a larger extent rated at a 2.5 bonus factor. The lock bonus for smaller crews is increased and there is a new length category of 31-49' scoring a 1.05 per mile bonus. Looks good for small boats with small crews :).

And you now score more points for legging through Dudley Tunnel than you would if it wasn't there and you could cruise that extent normally. That may be based on my feedback from last year.

I think you should be held to that.

Boats of 50' or over still get 1.1 points per mile but whereas all boats under 50' got 1 point per mile previously those of 31-49' get 1.05 points per mile this year so the gap is closed. In reality that's 2.5 additional points overall but it might just be enough.

The smaller crew differntials are much more pronounced. 4 or more crew is 1 point per lock, 3 crew is 1.2 points per lock and 2 crew is 1.5 points per lock.

Ah, I meant to say it's the same length as it's always been (50ft)

I received an application for the Titford Rally today as I sure many others have also. Although the Challenge and the Rally have been combined I can't see anything in the Challenge literature or the Rally application form that confirms arrangements for boats that have entered the Challenge.

I have mailed Brenda asking if Challenge boats get automatic entry to the Rally and if we will have allocated mooring spots on the Sunday. I can see us all being moored halfway to Titford Pools on the Sunday night.

The Rally entry form also states that the bar on Sunday will be open 1200 - 1700 and 1900 - 2330. So bring your own for the gap!

As I's is planning to be around Brum at exactly that time and having seen the notices to this in the past - any chance of a newbie being let in on the secret?  Just looked at the web and no rules/entry forms available although one of the posts here says you can ask for them on this forum.  I know its a while away but it would be nice to understand what its all about and see if it fits our itinerary.

A very enjoyable weekend of boating.

Just to clarify, the page has the entry form for this year, and the documents for last year challenge for reference, you will get this years documents emailed to you once you have sent off the entry form and cheque.  In reality there are very few differences in this years rules/scoring to last years, so last years docs give a good idea of what is involved.

Good point, just read the rally email, and did not think about if we would not actually be allowed to moor.  Hopefully the mooring scheme does reserve places for the challenge entrant, but I guess we will be well down, we were by Langley Mills last year anyway and that was just with the challenge boats.
