Erewash Canal - is it "doable" with 2ft 6inch draught?

Featured Posts

Hoping to make a trip up the Erewash to the Great North Basin next week, after half term, but am being told it's not currently possible with a draught of more than 2 ft due to the lack of rain this spring.

Two 58 ft NB's hoping to make the trip - one at 2 ft, the other at 2 ft 6 in

Have done a search on the forum but only finding info relating to 2016 and earlier

Does anybody have any recent experience or advice?

Thank you in advance for your help

We have I guess been up and down the Erewash a hundred times over the last 40 years. All our boats have been deep draught, Wyrd for example draws three feet over the whole length of the boat. We have never been unable to complete a trip because of the lack of water. It has sometimes been slow going but the friendly welcome at Langley Mill will make up for it. Regards, HughC.

I moored at Mills dockyard and cruised the Erewash on my 3 foot draught widebeam without any problems. Not been there for two years but unless something drastic has changed a narrowboat at 3 foot will find it a doddle.

Thank you all for your feedback and advice, it is very much appreciated!

On the basis of this we have decided to go for it and are looking forward to a few celebratory pints in some of Langley Mill's hostelries!

We will update as and when!

Thank you again

Hi Brian

Moor at the top of Trent lock for a few beers at the steamboat. The golf club is a ten minute walk, is open to all and does good food for absolute peanuts and has very comfy sofas.

I wish you luck with that.  The Great Northern next to the basin is anything but great.  The Bunny Hop micropub is a bit primitive, but at least has decent beer.

At the moment we are not experiencing low water levels and there has been a steady stream of boats up and down.

The Northern pub is ok and the Bunny Hop ale House has come on leaps and bounds over Tha past year since it's inception. They have live bands on at the weekend which can be a bit loud for the size of space but none the less very popular. Eastwood, a ten minute walk away has more drinking establishments which are very good too.

We look forward to welcoming you to Langley Mill.

Kind regards

Dan

Update, with apologies for the delay in posting!

We reached Langley Mill with no problems and can confirm that the Erewash is well worth the effort!

Should also add that several, much needed beers and a good meal ( 2 eat for £10) were enjoyed at the Great Northern last night and we will be revisiting before we leave!

Once again, thank you all for your feedback and advice, without which we would probably have not made the trip which would have been a shame - we have both really enjoyed the experience!

Kind regards

Brian
