I'd fly around the Universe on Fireball XL5

My heart would be a fireball

A fireball

And you would be my Venus of the stars.

I never fail to be amazed by the ammount of rubbish I carry about between my ear 'oles.

:)

With that Kind of Cartoon Culture around who needs Shakespeare?:D

We'd fly in space together

Conquerors of the sky

My heart would be a fireball

A fireball

And you would be my Venus of the stars.

SPACE PATROL !!!!!! Oh yes!

I don't think I've come across anyone else who remembers it.

A blond Venusian called Slim, a Martian called Husky and an Earthman whose name I can't recall as commander (of course)

Husky < in a deep Martian like voice > "I'm hungry. I think I'll have a sausage"

Slim < in a high Venusian voice > "You're always hungry Husky"

And wasn't there a strange creature called the Gabblerdictum bird?

While we're on the subject of ancient kids programs, any offers for Rubovia?

Ah yes, a bird that talked about four times the speed of normal human speech but was perfectly understandable. Just like my sister.

I think its name was called "Gabbler" in the programme.

A concept plundered latterly in the creation of Vicky Pollard, in "Little Britain".

We discussed that on here a while ago- the cat  furiously working the air pump for Witherspoon's organ (they can't touch you for it!)

I remember most of Gerry Anderson's output, starting with vague memories of Supercar because I'm not old enough to have seen Four Feather Falls, omitting Joe 90 because I was into my teens then, but including Terrahawks in the 1980s because I'd been an adult long enough by then to appreciate the importance of having some silliness in life, and boy was Terrahawks silly. That's set in 2020 by the way, so start getting ready for the alien invasion!

But I don't think I ever saw or even heard of Space Patrol although Wikipedia says it was shown from 1963 onwards. It seems that a lot depends on which ITV region you were in, although the article does say it was shown on weekdays in London. Maybe it was while I was at school, or was on opposite something on BBC (note for younger readers: there were no other channels then!)

I'm with you on that, my experience too. It must have been a scheduling conflict (to steal a modern term for a 60's transmission).

The Bumblies. Michael Bentine.

Wasn't it Bentine who also had the flea circus?

Or was that Bernie Winters? Him of Schnorbitz fame.

'Tis a strange thing but as a child I could see there was something faintly odd about all these TV characters, but not being very bright I couldn't figure out exactly what it was.

My parents told me they were puppets but frankly, I thought they were just making it up and guessing!

It was Bentine, done with air puffs from under the tray, IIRC.

And a tiny wire to make the springboard vibrate, and a tiny splash in the pool. Very clever stuff.

Are they related to the Jumblies, who went to sea in a sieve?

Far and few, far and few,
            Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.

There's been a few folk on here over the years who have bought something approaching a sieve. Not too good for the cut, let alone the sea!

And in twenty years they all came back,
  In twenty years or more,
And every one said, 'How tall they've grown!
For they've been to the Lakes, and the Torrible Zone,
And the hills of the Chankly Bore!'
