wobbly ollie
I want to get a better understanding of my diesel engine and basic mechanics of a narrow boat. So i am investigating different courses. RYA offer several 1 and 2 day courses. Any comments, suggestions and advice on such courses would be welcome..? Alan de Enfield
Wherever & whichever course you 'do' make sure it is an 'Inland Waterways' based course, as whilst the 'engines' may be similar, the 'basic mechanics of a narrowboat' are very different - at the very least - NBs need to meet BSS requirements, 'lumpy water boats' don't. (example : fuel filter requirements are very different for inland waterway boats and you cannot use standard 'boat' types) I believe that RCR (River Canal Rescue) also offer courses. cuthound
As mentined above RCR do couses. http://www.rivercanalrescue.co.uk/rcr-courses/boat-engine-maintenance/ They also do a personal course on your own boat, which I can highly recommend. http://www.rivercanalrescue.co.uk/rcr-courses/personal-engine-maintenance/ Edited February 12, 2017 by cuthound

Tony Brooks
Doesn't "our Tony'" do courses anymore? If he does we should be keeping it in the 'family' Afraid not - all my materials went to RCR and I understand they still base their courses on what I left them. The OP might do well to read both sets of course notes on my website. They are free to print out section by section for private use.
system 4-50
Doesn't "our Tony'" do courses anymore? If he does we should be keeping it in the 'family' No, which is a shame because they were brilliant. But none of us can go on forever, more's the pity.
