Donuts, no jam, where to get new one

Towed a boat into dock today, rope he'd fallen in during winding and jammed.

Owner hadn't noticed that the prop shaft had been pushed out 6" by the rope and shredded his donut coupling.

Any ideas where to get spares, midland chandlers doesn't stock, looks automotive to me.

Visible numbers are 20, 21 a 3 in a star symbol and the manufacture Goetze.

`Looks like Hillman Imp Drive shaft coupling doughnut, particularly as the gearbox end looks to be fabricated from the end of a drive shaft./

Was thinking it looked like the couplings off my old Lotus, which may well be the same thing.

Almost certainly Ford Granada propshaft doughnut. I use one. I have a spare which I can measure the bolt hole centres if you wish. Quinton Hazell number is QL 9000. Equiv; MDC 105.

Bolt hole to bolt hole centres is 2''

Diameter across opposite bolt hole centres is 4''

  • 4 weeks later...

Nothing but bad memories of these donuts, because my ex-wife was a specialist in killing them on my Lotus cars in the early 70's.

My only luck was that I had them cheap, as I was running the workshop of the Dutch Lotus importers at the time.

After I gave up with Lotus, there were much better short driveshafts available that did away with the donuts.

it's usually the case on boats.... things are cobbled together with the cheapest and most available (at the time) parts

especially when the part can be seen as a consumable (in that the part gets destroyed rather than the gearbox)

In my opinion the Granada doughnuts make brilliant shaft couplings and are far more robust and a touch more flexible than so called similar marine couplings that cost silly money. Mine has been on since 2004 ''£12'', with no sign of wear at all. Another boat here which I fitted one on in 1997 is still going strong too. They only thing is, keep oil and grease away from them.

You're absolutely right, if they're well treated they'll give you many years of excellent service.

Some people seem to do everything they can to reduce their lives or even break them, by often very wildly changing gears from forward into reverse with no time at all in between, and if possible with full throttle aswell, as quickly as they can move the controls from forward into reverse, and again, and again (what ? still not broken ?)
