As a carry-over from cycling days (when I'd cycle to work in temperatures down to -8C!) the best thermals I have found are the merino wool ones. Extremely warm and it doesn't even matter it they get wet since they still keep you warm, because of this I have also used them to good effect in some offshore sailing excursions. Wouldn't be without them:rolleyes:

As a slight aside, I once bought a pair of merino wool gloves, called "sealskins" or similar to go boating. Lovely and warm even when wet. All went well until I handled some ropes, whereupon they disintegrated!

I now use these, expensive, but up to the job. My pair is over 10 years old and still going strong.

Absolutely agree! I swear by merino icebreaker uppers and bottoms; never use anything else! http://uk.icebreaker.com/en/home
