Yes we do but it does not cover the pontoons, so as not to be intrusive, and we do not know the day the boat was taken so hard to check on the gates.

So he must have had an electronic tag/key to get to the pontoons?

 

On the boat keys presumably?

 

Ed. or he 'tailgated' sombody through the gates?

In the marinas we have stayed as temporary moorers that have such things it's usual for someone to hold the gate open for you if you follow them through.....even had it when we have only been there 5 minutes.....I know it seems the friendly thing to do but perhaps it's not the best idea when you think about it.

That is a noble thing, privacy. However, in the light of this theft from your marina, I'd consider re-aligning your cameras to cover the pontoons. I can't imagine any of your customers having a problem with that!

To be fair Mercia is one of the more secure marinas on the system.

 

It's a delicate balance between getting the security right and the place ending up looking like. POW-camp.

I think most would prefer to take action themselves, be it disabling the engine, fitting a tracker, etc. 24/7 big brother is very intrusive.

He asked for the pontoon by name,My guess is this bloke has been on the boat before

 

yes and he walked straight to the boat without hesitation, knowing which one it was perhaps because of the stern detail, once he was told the location of the pontoon. He undid the yale lock without hesitation, went in and switched on the power and off he went.

sorry folks but I will be off air for at least 1/2 hour as I drive home.

The key to the stern doors is actually a Yale key. Which will be much rarer than normal boat keys

Have the fuzz caught the bloke that stole that other boat last week?

Yes exactly, as I said earlier same MO, hopefully the two police forces are talking. It could be someone who has had access to both boats at some point, and has copies of the keys.

How would he know the owners were not on it.Opening the boat straight away I would say he had keys,I think it would take a few mins to pick a lock and if the neighbour was there would he want to be seen to be fiddling about with a lock he would want to look casual

Mike,I asked that question a number of days ago. Sounds like the same bloke. It would be interesting to know if the two boats concerned were worked on by the same business or independent tradesman. Sounds like both thefts were assisted by having keys.

 

The Police surely have to step up their investigation. Not Mr Bobby on the beat stuff. cID ought to get involved.

So I'd start by going through any workmen that have been on the boat. Which had access to keys? If not directly given them, however briefly, perhaps were left to work, with a set of keys being onboard, where they could have had opportunity to get copies. Or....more far fetched....is there a linking person who is connected to both stenson, and the builders of the other boat that was stolen, who perhaps does contract work for both...specialist fitting/painting/that kind of thing, where opportunity could arise to get hold of keys? It might help for you to talk to the other boats owners, and see if you have both used the same outside worker for anything to do with your boats.

It wouldn't be possible to tailgate as there is an automatic barrier that only allows one car through at a time. You need have to show your gate fob to open the gates and to raise the barrier. My thoughts are with Chris and Graham.

Something else that strikes me as odd, is both these boats had unusual and instantly recognisable stern steelwork.

 

If I were nicking a boat to use for myself, perhaps moving my old sinker ID across the the 'new' boat, I'd nick a clonecraft. Similarly if I were nicking a boat to sell on the towpath for cash in a hurry. Clonecraft.

 

Two boats with instantly recognisable hull steelwork taken here. Hard to explain.

 

I wonder if this one will turn up full of the same bloke's junk and fag ash...

I wasn't necessarily refering by car, so you are incorrect I'm afraid.

 

No marina is 100% secure though certainly as I already said Mercia is one of the better ones. If I was going to nick a boat, it wouldn't be the Marina I would choose to pinch one from.

 

Ed. In fact thinking about it I wouldn't even nick one from a marina at all given there is no need.

How many keys is a new Yale lock supplied with?, most locks I think are provided with 3 keys when new. So if the stolen boats first owners from new, ''Graham and Chris ?'' were supplied with only two keys, what happened to the 3rd one? detective.gif

Good point. The owners are trying to get onto the CWDF Facebook page. Just having a little trouble. Should be ok by the morning.
