Seeking a Bolinder 9hp engine

LCM

London Canal Museum is the proud owner of a 1932 9hp Bolinder which is on display in our galleries. We're refurbishing our exhibits about the boats and cargoes of the Regent's Canal and would like visitors to 'experience' the distinctive sound of this iconic engine. Does anyone have one on their boat, who would be happy for us to make a sound recording of it in action? We're happy to travel anywhere in the UK to do the recording and would acknowledge our thanks to you as the owner in our exhibit. Any help or leads would be great.

Amazing sound! Where are you based? Could we come to make our own recording at any time to suit you?

Just seen that you are in Coventry. That would be no problem at all for us - although you may be out on the canals at present.

We'd be delighted if we could record this for our exhibit.

Does this engine still have its serial number ? hopefully it will be on a plate attached to the cylinder, or alternatively it could be stamped on elsewhere.

I ask because I thought this was a slighter later engine than 1932 captain.gif

Afraid Mike the Boilerman is correct in that lots of important components are missing - and it's sited on an upper floor so not going to be possible to get her going! Hoping to find someone who already has a working one so we can make a good quality sound recording for the museum as next best thing! Do you know anyone who has one we could ask?

What about getting it running as an exhibit? NWM has a 'Power Hall' with many different varieties of engines running.

Ellesmere Port? We were there recently and their engine exhibition was as quiet as the grave. They had a notice up suggesting that visitors should fill in a feedback form if they'd like to see the engines running. Was I unlucky?

Won't a Bolinder 15hp do if you only require a recording ? There are few people who can tell the difference both visually and audibly captain.gif

15hp may be OK if we can't find a 9hp, but if possible, it would be good to trace one as we know there are some out there on the canals somewhere!

So it looks like you need to track down MINNOW captain.gif

edit = alter wording.

As ive said before the only 2 running that i know of are in minnow and clent. All otheres are 15 20 or 30 with the exception of the youngs 7 at Ellesmere port the is a 9 around that came out of amy the pup. But the only 2 in boats are clent and minnow.

A light sounding 15 will sound sim to a 9.

Tco dane is very light. Emu is quite a light sound for some reason they all sound slightly diffrent with or without the stack on. If you use a 15 i would use one without a stack on to get the higher pitch and run it slightly faster than tick over as 9s run slightly faster than the 15s

Not in a boat, but we've had this running in the car park.

If it's sounds that used to be heard around the Regent's canal and London area that you're after, then the little 9HP Bolinder isn't what you need.

They weren't really powerful enough for a pair of boats, which is why they were used by FMC in the boats built to run as single motors in the North.

The motors that were built to work with a butty in the South all had 15HP engines.

Its amazing the errors some museums make in their displays.

I was looking at a WW1 display t'other day and it included a "WW1 ammunition Box" and carefully stencilled on the side was the calibre "7.62mm x 51mm" which as anyone knows was a round not introduced until the late '50s. It brings the whole of the display into disrepute.

We know that a 9hp wouldn't have been used on Regent's Canal - my apologies - my first request at the start of this discussion might have been misleading. We have a non-working 9hp engine which we are seeking to interpret more fully. This is being done as part of a wider refurbishment of an adjacent display on boats and cargoes of the Regent's Canal. Lots of canal research is always underway at LCM, but we're always happy to hear where we can improve. Thanks for your observations.

Michael Pinnock of South Island Marina on the River Lea would be able to help you, I'm sure.
