V Belts and Wedge belts

Featured Posts

Theodora has three drive belts from the pulley on the gearbox to the pulley on the prop shaft. A site which sells belts talks about the two types.

What is the difference?

There are I think two basic V belt types:

Z, A, B. Types with widths of 10, 13, 17 and heights of 6, 8, 10. 'V' belt

SPZ, SPA, SPB. Types with widths of 10, 13, 16 and heights of 8, 10, 13. Wedge belt.

The profiles of the two types are different so you should not mix them up.

I'm not a smart Alec, the above is taken from the RS Catalogue.

Is your boat the one with the back to front engine, prop. shaft below it and a 'Rubber tyre' coupling. 'Barney Boats' used to have a similar configuration.

Often with belts you can see numbers printed on them, always a good start.

Yeah, sounds about right!

- We got told that they where just subtly diffrent profiles/angles as john has detailed. And that subsiquently they should not be mixed.

- However, he did go on to say, that should the need arise, anything is better than nothing. And then went on to tell about how he had once used a lenght of polyprop rope as a make shift fan belt on his old car, when the fans where actaully driven by belts...!

Theodora has, as you say, a back to front engine. But I have not seen the "Rubber tyre" coupling.

The writing onthe belt is SPA 1500 Fenner PB.

The last "PB" group could be just a logo.

Does this mean that it is a Wedge belt with a width of 13, a height of 10 and I suppose a length indicated by the 1500?

Are these likely to be in mm because I would guess that 1500mm would be too short.
