Notice is hereby given that due to the installation of safety gates into the Bridgewater Canal at Worsley the Canal will be closed to all navigation during the course of the works.

 

From: Monday 02nd November 2015 at 08.00am

To: Monday 29th February 2016 at 12.00 noon.

Location of closure: Approximately 400m West of the M60 motorway bridge and 1300m East of Bridgewater Marina.

 

The canal towpath is planned to remain open during the works, however please remain vigilant and obey any instructions posted locally.

 

Works to install the safety gates are programmed to be completed within the specified period of time. However, due to the nature of the work the Company cannot guarantee completion on the published date.

 

For further information or updates concerning progress of the works please visit the Bridgewater Canal website during the period of the closure.

 

The Bridgewater Canal Company regrets and apologises for any inconvenience that these necessary works may cause.

Similar to the one at Marsland Green bridge.

 

The canal will have to be dammed and drained, and the canal bed cleared for the gates to be measured, made and fitted.

 

But I agree, 4 months does sound like a long time.

The reason for the installation of the safety gates is very simple, they (peel Holdings) are having a panic attack about the Pendleton Fault system, which is creeping. There is a major branch of this fault crossing the canal just to the south of the East Lancs Road, it was moving at about 2" a year, last time I heard tell of it a few years ago. There are already safety gates protecting this and the bank is piled with the largest piles you will see on a canal or not in reality, they are 80ft piles, they are massive and mostly in the ground! They have been advised that as this is not the main fault line, that they also need to protect for it moving in other places. Thus the new safety gates.
If you think this is all tosh ask your self why the M62 has lots of bumps in it, which the highways agency never seem to fix (Actually they do them about twice a year) This is where it crosses Glaze Brook to the east of Junction 11. Its the same fault system moving there are well. This movement may be related to old mine workings but it may not be. and because of the "not be" Peel and the Highways agency have to pick up the tab.

So it's not because they were refused planning permission to build a horse racing course/rock concert venue on the site, neither is it anything to do with the refusal to build 600 houses just down the road in Monton (with a marina) or is it that if the horses are off the menu (or in the lasagne) then maybe build houses, but below the level of the canaltongue.png

I guess that in over 250 years(since the Bridgewater was built) something might go wrong but could you sell uninsurable houses? That side the canal did breech there about 30/40 years ago, it was nearly abandoned and the whole area flooded but that's years before it became the local tip and they build up the land levels a bit.

Look at a map of Salford and you'll see why such a massive piece on land so close to the middle of Manchester is basically open countryside.
