What is going on in Russia?

There appears to be a strange situation in Russia.

Mr. Putin has not been seen for over a week. He has missed several appointments.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2015/03/14/this-is-why-its-impossible-for-the-kremlin-to-lie-about-putins-weird-disappearance/

The Kremlin has told journalists not to leave Moscow and to expect a major announcement.

http://www.westernjournalism.com/kremlin-tells-journalists-not-leave-moscow-weekend-expect-major-announcement/#sc1fjSd2SeevOy7U.97

This tweet claims that "All employees of the Russian Embassy in London from the various officers and attaches the last few days have left the UK"

https://twitter.com/adept_istiny

and interestingly, Putin's last public appearance on March 5th ties in with the last recorded UVB-76 anomaly

Ant ideas what is happening?

I'm not sure him being ousted would be a good thing. Things will seriously kick off if that is the case..

I can't see that Putin being ousted would make much difference to Russia's position or foreign policy. Over recent years they have been growing increasingly nervous about the eu's eastward expansion into their former buffer zone, the situation in Ukraine seems to be the last straw and I can't see that changing under new leadership.

That's a good point, and overlaps with my reaction which was that perhaps we in the West should try to consider things from Russia's point of view. NATO's expansion is obviously seen as a threat (rightly or wrongly, it doesn't matter which). Time to keep talking, not wave weaponry around.

George Orwell said "Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self-defence against a homicidal maniac" and the West's position towards President Putin seems to conform with that adage.

Two possibilities

Putin is going to release evidence that 9/11 was an inside job.

Putin is going to announce that they have discovered evidence of extra terrestrial life.

I am not so sure. Russia has become increasingly isolated recently and his actions in Eastern Europe have virtually plunged the 'East and West' back into a 'cold' war.

If he is to be ousted then it is either by moderates who resent the position he has got Russia into and who would like to re-build relationships with the West, this being the better scenario OR it could be a move by the war mongers who don't think he is being aggressive enough in which case start building your fall out shelter now!

Just to add fuel to the conspiracy theories I see the whole BBC news web site has gone down too. I cant remember the last time that happened.

Looks like all BBC sites, not just the news. Either a cyber attack or they are handing over control to the aliens prior to the big reveal...

By isolated you mean Russia isn't the favourite country of the EU/US after it got in the way of them gaining control of the Crimean deep water port in the fascist coup they sponsored in Ukraine?

The doublethink over the Ukraine in the western media is spectacular. The aggression in the Ukraine is Western aggression.

I'm not too worried yet. The ITV news site is looking normal, their top stories are the cyclone in Vanuatu and a speech by Ed Miliband about his election manifesto. Nothing about Russia or the BBC, so that suggests ITV are not too worried and the BBC are just having an embarrassing IT problem. There are so many news channels that a cyber attack to take them all down would be very difficult I imagine.

Perhaps those trucks leaving the Kremlin are because Putin's downsizing to go and live on a canal boat. Russia has lots of canals and rivers for him to explore.

On the other hand, perhaps we can expect trouble tomorrow? "Beware the Ides of March" (that's on the 15th)

Delta9, I suspect I'm not alone in having no idea what a UVB-76 anomaly is; would you care to explain because the link doesn't tell us much?

The BBC site was down a few minutes ago when I looked, but it's back now.

The big news to me is that Crystal Palace are 3-0 up at home to QPR. December's relegation worries are a distant memory... Happy days.

UVB-76 is a russian numbers station also known as "the buzzer" It normally transmits 25 short buzzes per minute. On rare occasions it stops transmitting the buzzer and a voice message is heard. Nobody knows it's purpose.

This is the transmission from march 5th http://priyom.org/media/150938/s28-4625usb-20150305-095504z-msg.ogg

"Russia has become increasingly isolated recently and his actions in Eastern Europe have virtually plunged the 'East and West' back into a 'cold' war."

Is Russia isolated? Where are we all (well... not me, anyway!) buying our boat equipment from? China!

Russia is sitting next to China - the world's richest country(?) - and may get along fine selling their oil and gas to China.

India is also next door.

(Very handy both countries so close for take-aways!).

Russia may be able to do very nicely without Europe which is becoming rapidly Islamicised and swamped with people coming over on boats from the coast of north Africa.

Putin, to me (I may be wrong!), seems like a clever chap whose target seems to be to turn Russia into a first world power and a nation for others to admire. Meanwhile Obama in the USA has allowed millions of illegal immigrants to swarm over the Mexican border - could it be that America and Europe are going to the pits whilst the bright star of a Russian-Chinese-Indian-Australian-New Zealand alliance rises?

Britain's coal industry - closed. Britain's textile industry - closed. Britain's canal system - largely neglected. Britain's railway system - largely decimated. Britain's military - reduced.

If Russia was to turn off their gas & oil supplies to Europe, and perhaps have Arabia's oil diverted towards Russia, what then? No need to throw nukes around, just ignoring the silly EU (look at the Greek bailout farce) would be enough...?

Just my own thoughts.

An interesting thing would be to write down on a piece of paper what you think will happen in the next 5 years, and 5 years on re-read what you wrote and see how accurate your prediction was.
