Narrow boat insurance

I've had a look at canal world and it seems straightforward, but can't I get contents insurance as well on the same policy? Without my furniture and most of my books, I haven't got much of real value, but I'd struggle to replace it all if the boat sank.

Our policy with GJW certainly covered the boat and contents, and when we had an incident of vandalism and theft we were very satisfied with their quick and straightforward handling of the claim for replacement both of broken windows and of several hundred pounds' worth of contents. I always assumed other companies offer similar policies - maybe not? (Not sure what companies/policies you've looked at.)

We are with Craftinsure and from this renewal the 3rd party is up to £5m which is what C&RT require to use the dry dock at Wigan, all others we have contacted are £3m with an extra payment to up to £5m

Handy as we are in Wian DD for two weeks in June

Premium has gone up by £5 this year despite 8 years of no claims but still competative so we will renew

I am with Navigators and General (owned by Zurich) via Collidge and Partners in Margate. First year liveaboard in marina with £25k contents on £100k vessel was about £550.

Having worked in insurance for a decade or two the most important part to me is really how they handle claims IF I should need it, as that is when you really need the good service customer service approach.

I had a £3000 water damage claim in first 7 months of the policy and whilst Nav and Gen were helpful and appointed an exceptional loss adjuster they said no to almost the whole claim on the Friday, which by Monday had turned into paying all of it!!! They are not a specialist canal boat insurer and are not set up to instruct repairs so will settle in full and leave you to your own devices. Sometimes this is a good things, sometimes it is not (9months later still not finished the bathroom!).

In the second year I removed the contents, it went down to £250 approx. and I added the contents it to my home insurance policy as a specified second home.

Hi,

Just to let people know of a goodwill article I spotted on our insurers site to help you avoid boat insurance content claims. Doesn't deal with accidental damage side of things but rather malicious intent but useful nonetheless;

https://www.merciamarine.co.uk/boat_information/boat_security_recommendations_article.aspx

Strangely though I didn't even realise Mercia did contents insurance as it is available only via the phone... a bit antiquated in this day and age?! Nevertheless same as widebeamboy it was actually just quite a bit cheaper (nearly £100) to just add my narrowboat contents items and generator onto my home insurance policy (I'm with the lot from confused so they are fair cheap anyway). Appreciate that doesn't help liveaboarders but I guess will help many.
