seized/stiff engine water pump probs

Engine hasn't really been ran for 5 months due to emulsified oil in engine and gear box. This has been sorted now but now the water cooling pump isn't working. Belt has been tightened to the max but it still won't drive, will move slightly by hand but very stiff, what's the best course of action?

It's probably jammed up with crud (that's a technical term).

 

The correct answer is remove the pump, clean it out, lubricate the bearings then re-fit it, or fit a new one.

 

The pragmatic answer is take the vee belt off then get a grip on the pulley by whatever means you can, and force it to rotate. Kepp turning it back and forth until it goes right around and seems fairly free, then put the vee belt back on. Start the engine and it will prolly be fine now :)

Alternatively, the bearings have rusted up, and it's dead

I'd have thought oil in the water would have reduced the likelihood of the bearings rusting...

 

But then it depends on the sort of bearing I suppose, and condition of the seals.

 

(No not THAT sort of seal.)

And its a jabsco foot mounted engine cooling pump on our ancient 4 cylinder perkins engine

 

Hmmm.... Try replacing the impeller then! Easy to do. The hard bit is finding the right impeller.

The whole engine was submerged in november so I guess some rusting of bearings may have occurred. Will take apart and clean up tomorrow. Worst case will need a new pump. Hope they are easy/quick to buy as need to move boat rather soon

Hmmm.... Try replacing the impeller then! Easy to do. The hard bit is finding the right impeller.

Yes and my suggestion to work the pulley back and forth to free the pump won't really work on a Jabsco, unless you take the impeller out first anyway.

 

And have a look around in the boat/engine bay - owners of Jabsco pumps often have a new spare impeller lying around in a box ready for the day it is badly needed in a hurry...

Your Jabsco impeller pump most probably has simple plain bush type bearings possibly lubricated by an adjustable gland nut on the drive spindle behind the pulley with packing or O ring for the spindle water seal. Take the drive belt off, the impeller cover off, pull out the impeller, clean out and free off the spindle bearing by undoing the gland nut with penetrating oil turning the pump pulley back and forth. Once free if a grease gland type repack with stern-tube grease. If it leaks water at the spindle afterwards and gland nut adjustment doesn't fix it the gland will need new packing or 0 ring. Once free you may find the spindle and or bearing worn, check by rocking the pulley from side to side. You will most likely need a new impeller and cover plate gasket or 0 ring gasket.
