I was told by Roger Hatchard that it was he who refitted and decorated TYCHO's back cabin when I spoke to him in 2008 (IIRC the year). No idea what it was like beforehand.

Fairly standard cabin with bed'ole. Comfy and welcoming.

 

That top step above is probably original with its 1936 pennies in place (I still have them somewhere). That step was condemned at Stockton. I had my doubts about its alleged condition, but never got to see - as it got binned. Looks like Rogers coal box step (it's not part of the box) has survived, as has the polish cupboard, and the under-bed draws might be the ones I paneled (which may well have not been original, but looked much better for paneling and beading).

 

Since then much of the cabin was stripped out for extensive work to uxter plates, swim end and counter. I began rebuilding the cabin in the same fashion, and using 3M insulation behind several panels, but circumstances forced a sale. Nice to see the Larbert installed. We bought that from a Camden 'antiques' shop C1980. Never did see it fired up. The dimensions for SICKLE's rebuild were taken from TYCHO by Dave & Matt Parott [sp?], so the engine 'ole should be the same. Not much room at the front of the Petter, but it's a good strong engine.

 

It was a bit of a camp site under the blue tops, but very useful with bed, table and easy chair.

Yes, I thought it was a fair bit more than now.

 

Obviously it is any vendor's choice what price they start at, but my own view is you need to be reasonably realistic.

 

I don't think you help your chances of a sale by going in too high, and then having to make significant reductions.

 

I have no real idea what any tug is worth, because they are such a rare and specialist beast, and one with a five foot ice ram still attached is clearly a lot more unusual still.

 

Obviously something like Sudbury has far less history as a shortened boat, but that was, IIRC, priced in low £30Ks,. I was surprised how long that took to sell.

 

If I were to consider Tycho, (which I'm definitely not doing!) the paint job would have to go, as it is simply not to my taste. I really liked the way it was done in BW colours, and would have it put back that way.

And Caggy was offered at £36k and last time I looked was under offer.

 

I suppose arguably even harder to put a price un than a tug based on an ex GUCCCo boat, because it is a total one off. But if you factor in the ice ram, then so of course is Tycho.

 

I would pay significantly more for Tycho than Caggy, but it is a highly personal thing.

I thought the cabin was fitted out by Paul Painter who bought TYCHO from Alfred Matty and Sons Ltd.. Having said that I might be assuming this as many owners did their own work back then - and he was on good terms with Roger Hatchard who was known to do a bit of boat fitting and painting as a sideline. Mr Painter went on to own BIRMINGHAM and kept it outside Mr Hatchard's house at Worcester.

 

Was the steel work you had done on TYCHO over-plating or removal and re-plating, and can I ask who did this work ?

If they were friends, I suppose it's possible they did it between them. Prior to our ownership, Paul Money left TYCHO with WFBCo with a list of engine work done by Tim Wood in April '99, and it was from Tim Higton we bought her in June '99. She went back to Stockton dock a few years later for the steelwork. No overplating (some had apparently been done before) but new steel where needed. Greame Pearce & Co did the steelwork. Some welding, and some hot riveting.

The new owner had her shot blasted which uncovered thin bottoms which he had overplated completely. Further cabin work may have been done up on the Lee.

Currently moored in view mable and forget me not.

Very sad looking recent 2000s work deteriorating apart from rudder. Butty needs more than bit of calking try gunnels and top sides, and looks quite twisted. Tragic remember happy Americans on holidays...

Very sad looking arnt they. Im tempted to offer 1k for them both but i know ill prob just keep the butty and sell on mable

Does MABEL still have its engine fitted, or was it removed prior to 'sinking into preservation' ?

I would also like to know this as it makes a difference to the value. If the engine is in dry storage elsewhere, it has some value. If it is sat in the bottom of Mabel swimming in water...

Mable has the Armstrong fittet but they have a spare as well. I would prob sell the bits on and give mable away to make my 1k back but the wife will put an end to it unless i told her there free.

Most of the cabin parts and some running gear engine butty parts lots are in stoorage but the bits on the boat will be useless apart from spairs

I would love to make the offer but when i weigh it up 1 i dont think they would accept 1k for everything. 2 the wife will kill me 3. I dont need 3 boats, i dont need 3 boats, i dont need 3 boats nope i need 2 with a pile of bits and spares. Ill happly take the good wood! I could do with 3 boats though.
