dor
We are going to be in Exeter for a couple of days next week. We fancy a walk by the canal; does anyone have any recommendations for any sites of particular interest or worth looking at? We don't mind walking a few miles and have transport. Timleech
We are going to be in Exeter for a couple of days next week. We fancy a walk by the canal; does anyone have any recommendations for any sites of particular interest or worth looking at? We don't mind walking a few miles and have transport. Thanks I can't remember the exact details, but there's a nature reserve on the W side of the canal with car parking and footpaths to the canal, then walk down the canal to the sea lock, have a pint & walk back again. No public road access to the pub. Tim Edit to add - link with more suggestions Edited November 15, 2012 by Timleech
Lesd
You'll pass it on the way down the M5, the canal at Tiverton is nice, makes a nice walk
eightacre
The "Turf" inn and the "Double Locks" are both worth a visit. Tiverton canal is good for walking.
Rob@BSSOffice
You may see a fire damaged boat? See http://www.thisisexeter.co.uk/boat-Exeter-Quay/story-17309089-detail/story.html Probably not the best thing for a pleasant walk by the water... but the quay looks very attractive on Google Street View. keble
Definitely another vote for the 'Double Lock' establishment. If you keep walking under the M5 bridge you can get a ferry (rowing boat!) across to Topsham. Worth a visit
FadeToScarlet
It's worth getting the train to Starcross and then walking up the canal via the Turf and Double Locks pubs to Exeter itself where the quayside and canal basin are very nice. John Holden
My father once many years ago was telling me a story about a crowd of druggies who lived on a boat at Exeter and grew weed on the mud flats so the police couldn't find it. When I asked why the police didn't just go out when the tide was out he . . .

NickF
Thanks for the suggestions people. Looks like there are some nice walks in the area. Lots of interesting shops, pubs, cafes etc on "The Quay" on the Exe, you can then cross the suspension bridge a little downstream (on foot ) and cut across to the canal and walk down to the locks. ... There is even a trip boat that runs down there if you don't fancy the walk back! Have fun. Nick
TimD
The Double locks has let its standards slip a bit in the last couple of years. It's in a great location but the beer and food has been on autopilot for a while as they know they'll always get the custom. If you have to make a choice of just one then Turf Lock is much the better bet. Oh and the towpath walk at tiverton's just become a hell of a lot more interesting BBC link
