Hi Swindler, and Kieron of course !

I have original the engine manual and parts list, so any information from those can be provided,

I also have a couple of incomplete engines that I keep for spares, so let me know what you need to know or obtain. Cheers. Mick

Mick, this is the manual that i have for the engine, is this what you have or is it different? S winder.

Hi Swinder.

Yes, the manual i have is the same as that in your photo, So you will be looking at plate 4A page 55 for the control mechanism. I will also have a look to see whether |I have a complete set of the controls on a spare crankcase in the back of the shed. It might be a week or so before I am back off the boat .

I also have an advertising brochure and price list, but unfortunately undated. But it lists the HDW Mk 2 with the hydraulic gearbox at £ 490.00 ex works.

Nice to know someone else likes these engines too. They are well balanced and of course being horizontally opposed they fire evenly, not like a vertical which fires twice consecutively then a gap before repeating. I was going to install one into our narrowboat but it was going into an engine room, and as they are about 3'6" wide would have needed to be offset to one side to walk conveniently past, so I ended up putting in a Ruston Hornsby 2VTH vertical engine, which is nice and narrow.

As a mater of interest I think there was one vertical twin diesel made that fired evenly, which was a Coventry Climax ( different maker altogether than Coventry Victor) who I seem to remember made a diesel called a CDQ ?, which incorporated balanced crankshaft arrangements to enable both pistons to reach TDC together. I am rather hoping someone will come on and confirm my recollection ( or tell me it was my imagination! )

Will come back to you asap about the linkage.

Cheers. Mick

Hi S winder, Apologies for late response. Managed to crush hand between boat and bridge arch on Derwent and been in Hull hospital last week. Afraid I don't do smartphones and downloading pictures. If you PM your address I can make a sketch and post it to you. Thanks.

Hi Swinder.

I have had a look to see whether there was a spare linkage with my spare crankcase, but unfortunately not.

I will remove one of the pumps and try to take photos of the linkage part but need to get my son or someone with IT skills to forward them to you. I can mend engines but all this mobile phone and computer lark is way beyond me!

I may need you to PM me your mobile phone number to do it.

Will see what can be managed. As Kieron says, they are a little right angled aluminium casting with a fulcrum rod cast into them to engage with the slots in the operating arms, and they are drilled to take a bolt fixing to the fuel pump rack. They are also paired, i.e. handed, but I could see them being reasonably easy to fabricate out of a bit of steel , once you have the dimensions.

Cheers. Mick

Hi Denkweb, was hoping one of the other guys on this thread would have noticed this by now. I haven't got a copy of the manual and got my info from Mick. I think I only needed figures for valve and bump clearances which I still have for the HDW. Whats the story behind your boat ? intrigued by the exhaust, it looks like it's routed into the side rails. Do you have to wear ear plugs under your ear defenders when you're pushing against the tide ?

The boat has been used in small Dutch canals for mowing-purposes. The exhaust through the pipes was fixed by the previous owner. Stupid idea, though... gets way too hot. Gearbox doesn't work properly when in reverse. Am looking for a manual to get it fixed.

The engine runs perfectly. Leaks a little diesel on the pumps (rubbers worn out) and, at speed, sprays a small bit of oil somewhere from 1 cilinder. Seems to be no big issue to fix.

I am considering selling or taking it apart completely and rebuild it. But without a manual it just doesn't seem to be a good idea.

Think if you want to stop the pumps leaking from the racks they will need to go to a specialist. The bellows style rubbers ( if that's what you mean ) are dust covers. There's a good place in Scunthorpe I got put onto on this forum which wasn't expensive for the pair. Maybe not a great help if you live in Holland. The gearbox I don't know, not totally sure who made it. Have asked before and those with ' the knowledge ' on here think that it may have been made by ' Parsons ' although it has Cov Vic cast onto it.  Never had one apart myself. They come up on ebay here once in a blue moon, usually in pairs attached to water cooled engines HDW and sell cheap. Hope you find a way to sort it, I think ( others may disagree ) that it would be a shame to remove the set up that you've got. The clip put a smile on my face anyway.

At least some leads to follow! Thank you for this information. I found a original extended techmanual for both the engine and gearbox (strangely enough in the outback of Australia) which will be shipped to me one of these days.

I still have to consider to take the gearbox and injectors apart, or selling the boat as it is.

Got the manual now! The gearbox is manufactured by Coventry Victor.... no third party. Have been mailing around lately. With the manual, I just need to find some time!

Hi Yoke. I don't know if you have ebay in Thailand. It has been the best source for second hand engine parts for me. There is no longer a supplier of new old stock that i am aware of. The filters on the HDA are the same as some other engines and getting fuel pump(s) and injector(s) reconditioned in the UK is not a problem. Ironically the best place i could find to have new head gaskets for my engine made was in Thailand. Hope this helps. Kieron

The fuel pump parts now come from Bosch India...........Bosch India is the source of all  Bosch/CAVmechanical pump  and injector components now.,where the parts are the Bosch/CAV type......ie not later ,and not Simms or Bryce.
