I've been just under a year on the water now. I bought Miracle a 20ft Springer last October. I know now, having survived my first winter that I'll be living this way until I am physically unable.

Ultimately, I see myself on something around 36 - 38ft. Realistically, I'm not going to be in the position to purchase a boat that size in the condition I would like until I have doubled my current savings. Saving that remainder will take another 18 - 24 months.

There are two features I really want: a permanent bed and a side hatch over my sink.

Miracle could potentially have this hatch, there's space for a small / single sided hatch over my sink. She has a porthole window there now.

I've been quoted 700 by one person and 1000 from another. And that's when the horror stories start... what below is actual fact?

1. It will warp the side of the boat

2. it means gutting that section of your boat (i love my kitchen)

3. More steel needs adding to the framework.

Forum member Kedian specialises in this kind of work, and has a good reputation. He makes and fits a framed side hatch that reinforces the hole

A couple of forum members have had this work done

They also fitted one in 'Joanie M'. Just what we wanted, no fuss, they came to our mooring and fitted it. I saw another boat at SActon Bridge on the Weaver who had fitted one himself with no problem.

Richard comes to the rescue again! I was just about to suggest you search for my thread, but he has done if for me. Great job by Martin Kedian and his team - clean and fast and we now have a lovely hatch. You can choose whether to self-fit, have it delivered and fitted (I advise the fitting unless you;re really confident- they have bigger better tools for cutting boats and are practiced) with metal only, or you can have all the timber etc done too (most expensive option).

  • 2 weeks later...

So that is settled then my wee "SKODA" boat is getting LUXURY bits.

I'm chuffed.

I don't care if its extravigant or if I'm polishing a Turd.

She's mine. She'll be the most ridiculously pimped 20 feet of boat on the Lee.

I am embracing my "inner baby brasser".

very happy mr. stuart!

most people voted "do what makes you happy" - i am. and I have every confidence that its going to be great :)

Mr.Kedian has even agreed that I can film the fit.. so that'll be cool. We'll do a timelapse of it. I suspect even some learned boaters may be interested to see it!
