Water levels on the River Soar?

The river isn't really full til they have Holme Lock closed and tied when the downstream side is the same level as the upstream side. Yes I've seen that.

Or Knocking on the top of Torksey bottom gates - Also a sight to be seen !

We are fairly lucky (??) on the Soar to still have plenty of flood plain , with the rebuild of Kegworth & Ratcliffe locks & turning Redhill & Kegworth shallow into floodlocks , the river doesnt flood half as bad as in my youth.

We know were in trouble when the Wreake introduces so much water that the cut past the boatyard starts flowing the wrong way !!

can anyone update us on the Soar levels around Pillings flood lock to Barrow please?

Flood lock was closed at Pillings yesterday but green on traffic lights so could work through it. Reasonable flow through Barrow bridge but current was dropping off rapidly yesterday so would expect no issues today. We've just popped down from Loughborough onto the Trent and the Soar is very quiet now at this end.

Barrow deep is now showing a red light since this afternoon.

I would think it will keep rising, the amount of water deposited in the Soar catchment area today was immense...

edited to add, The Soar at sileby is about to overtop the banks...

A notice for later this week.

Lock 43 Limekiln

As a result of the failure of the top end ground paddles the canal will be closed to allow the locks to be drained to replace the paddle stands.

British Waterways apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

The lock will be drained therefore no boats will be permitted to enter the lock for the duration of the works.

The nearest winding hole is upstream of Lock 43 Limekiln and downstream at Lock 44 Belgrave.

Obviously the repair they made the other week or so (Which worked well without problems) has failed. Hopefully the far side ground paddle may be finally reinstated (Fingers crossed!) Its not been present/working for the last 10yrs at least.

We took some Aussie relations out on Sat. Starting at Thurmaston and heading downstream. All was peaceful until we got to the junction of the Wreake. At that point the boat accelerated and off we trundled towards the weir. Moored up opposite the weir and assessed the situation. The water below Junction lock was 9" into the red (allowing for refraction it was probably over a foot into the red) Turning was necessary to get back to base so we went down through the lock and winded with our bows into the river opposite the first bend.

We all enjoyed the day, though, and the weather was good.

We hope to be going down the Soar on Saturday and Sunday, as part of the Leicester Ring. What are river levels like at the moment? The weekend forecast is not good - should we consider a different route? We're on a tight schedule so couldn't afford to moor up for a day or two. Thanks in advance.

The levels are holding steady, not really dropping or rising, ongoing showers like we are experiencing should hold it at the same level. The worst rain is forecast slightly North of the catchment area.

Use the link at the top of page 2 to keep an eye out, you can look at the Trent levels using that too.

Cheers Matty. Looking at that link the rivers seem fine. Do I start to worry when it moves out of the green area on the graph?

Thats a fairly good way of interpreting it, until april it was well below the green bit for most of the winter/spring.

You need to be aware of localised rain from north and south of leicester. The Soar tends to rise quite quickly, 4-18 hours after any serious rainfall.

The main problem on the Trent up to Shardlow is the flow from the Derwent which can rise equally fast, the Trent is much slower to respond to downpours.

Where are you cruising from and how long have you got for the holiday??
