  1. My Lister 2 cylinder wc engine has been diagnosed as having a faulty water pump as well as requires new hosing for the cooling system (header tank filled). I am having real problems getting an engineer to come out to do the work. Can anyone recommend an engineer that is happy to work in London. I am moored in E5, close to Springfield Park. Many thanks in advance.
  2. Hi everyone, I hope you can help, I've tried looking on the forums but can't find any comments on this specific problem, although there are lots about water pressure. I did give the others threads a read but if anyone has had this specific problem that would be helpful! When I turn my taps on, all my taps (kitchen, bathroom & shower), there is around a 10 second delay and then the water rushes out really fast. It only works on high pressure. Any pointers as to where to investigate first? I think its quite old so may just be showing its age but i wanted to ask around if there is something I should check before replacing it. My setup as you can see if the photos is a Shurflo 30psi accumulator that I've pumped up to 30psi and a Jabsco Par-Max 2.9 I'm not sure what the device is at the far right, is that a none return valve? (between the pump and the on/off switch). Thanks for the help! I'm looking forward to getting more stuck into this online boaters community. Si See pump setup in pictures below
  3. Hey there Canal World, Wishing everyone a happy and safe Christmas. In the off chance some somebody knows here - I'm trying to identify the inlet (filter) attached to this Jabsco par-max 1.9 water pump. It's not done yet, but I'm looking to find and purchase a spare, as soon as identify the brand name and model. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
  4. It is very likely that I need a new water pump and looking back through the posts on here it seems that Jabsco is the one to go for. The current delivers 10.9 lpm and Jabsco have one that gives 11 lpm at around £65.00 and another that gives 13 lpm at around £110.00. That's a big price difference for the extra 2 litres so is the more expensive pump of a better quality? Or is there something else that accounts for the difference?
  5. Sorry repeated post
  6. Hi I have a BMC 1.5L on a GRP the bolt that holds the small belt wheel[which connects the belt to the larger belt]which drives the pump to cool the engine with canal water has lost its thread, I took the washer off which gave me a couple of mm to get it back on to take it back to mooring, I left the boat at mooring and never brought the bolt with me to compare it at a shop. So my question is, as it will be an imperial thread / bolt anyone know what size I am probably looking at to try and buy off e bay rather than having to retrieve bolt and take to a engineering shop. I am a nurse, not an engineer and new to boating so forgive my ignorance. Any advice welcomed. I don't mind buying a few probables.
  7. I have an old BMC 1.5 / Thornycroft 90 fitted to my boat that is raw water cooled, unfortunately it is not pulling enough water through and has caused the engine to overheat leaving a trail of white steam behind me. I have been on the Jabscoshop website looking for a service kit but the only pump they show for this enging is a pedestal mount and the one fitted to my engine is engine mounted and crank driven. Ive tried to contact Jabscoshop for advice but to no avail can anyone point me in the direction of someone who can supply advice and a service kit for my water pump Cheers A
  8. morning all!! i recently replaced my water pump to something a bit more powerful as i had issues with water pressure and my paloma not working very well, now there is plenty of pressure, in fact so much so that the water does not have time to get hot enough now as it passes through the boiler too quickly (the opposite of what i had before which was water too hot, but with the addition of cold reduced the pressure and so stopped the boiler burning - they're pretty contrary and fickle these boats I'm finding out!!). the new issue is this: when i try and turn the hot tap down a little (or even the cold tap for that matter) the pump sort of only comes half on, judders a little and the lights flicker. what is going on with this???? with the old pump if i turned the tap down a little there would still be a steady decrease in pump speed, water pressure etc, now it seems like the pump only likes it when the taps are full on, not half on?? And why would this affect the electrics?? has anyone had this problem before? yours rather frustradedly SB
  9. Hi All! My wife and I have a 63 foot narrowboat. We recently had a Paloma hot water boiler replaced (the old one didn;t work when we bought the boat a few months ago). The Paloma is situated in the galley, around one third of the way along the boat from the bow. The water pump is on the inside of the boat, on the other side of the wall from the cratch. Our bathroom is another third of the way down the boat. When we turn on the hot water tap in the bathroom the Paloma (set on highest temp) ignites (only when water turned on full) and we get hot water - but too hot to shower under. If we turn the cold water on - even just a little - then the Paloma stops burning (presumably because of a lack of water pressure), so then we have cold water. If I turn down any of the settings on the Paloma (down to 'two flames', or down to anything less than '5') then it does not ignite even when hot water tap is turned on full and cold water off. So, we have either hot or cold water, but no happy medium. We are new to narrowboats! Can we turn the water pressure up on the pump? Will this cause leaks if we do? Can we make the Paloma more sensitive to water pressure? Is there anything we can do to solve this?? Any advice would be much appreciated!!! Cheers!!
  10. Following last week's post I've dug the pump out, and after a couple of other checks fastened it straight to a leisure battery. The battery is fairly old but fully charged and holding charge (evidence - I charged it in the office about six months ago and the AVO still says 12.64 volts). A spark as I connected the battery so clearly a circuit is being completed but nothing from the pump, zilch, nada. No whirring, no hum, no smoke, not a sausage. Photo of the pump below - replacement is £25 on the internet. Simple question, is it really up to the job, or should I invest in something with more oomph? 45 foot boat, two radiators.
  11. Hi My Shurflo has develop partial incontinence. I'm assuming this matter has been debated to death but rather than searching through the archives I decided to post it as a new topic, mostly because I couldn't waste an opportunity of mentioning ''partial incontinence'' in a forum topic and then repeat it a few times in the text. Rather than repair it I could just replace the whole partially incontinent mess as it's six years old anyway, but then realized it's been discontinued. Any suggestions? Would it be worth repairing it (after finding out if it's the diaphragm or what exactly is wrong with it) or just replace the thing with the closest replacement on the market right now? Thanks in advance
  12. Hi gang, Just trying to get an idea of what might be going on with my water system, so I can decide what to do next. We have a 36ft trad. The water tank is at the front under the bow, calorifier under the bed toward the back and overflow pipe into the bilge at the back. Problem is only happening when there is water in the water tank. There is a step up from the cabin to the bow. Sometimes we are finding a significant amount of water pooling around the step. Inside the step is dry, the back of the step is dry. I am not sure where the water is coming from, other than I have a hunch it's from the main tank. The water pump makes a whirring sound every 5 to 10 minutes. The overflow pipe into the bilge is continuously dripping and the bilge needs emptying every 2 days. I have, for now, emptied all the water from the tank and switched off the water pump. I've left it for a week and there is no water in the bilge. Any ideas/ experience would be gratefully received. Thanks, Gemma
  13. Hi all, i have a Sahara S500 water pump which has just started not to come on automatically. If you twist the small bit at the top which I assume is connected to the float it will come on and get rid of the water in the box. But if I fill up the box manually it will not come on. i have cleaned it out as best as I can without any difference and the only other issue I can see is the flap on the rubber seal has come away. Anybody had had this issue or any advice? cheers strummerjoe.
  14. Help and advice please! Apologies in advance for being completely clueless, but I'm here to hopefully learn how not to be... This morning I turned on the hot water (Morco gas heater) to do the washing up.. Water didn't get hot so I went back to check and the pilot light had gone out. There were loud rattling/banging sounds coming from the calorifier. I turned off the water pump and the sounds continued for about 20 seconds. I've tried turning on the pump again and the sounds come back. I have realised that the coolant for the 2 litre expansion tank has run dry.. Is this the cause? How much damage has been done by allowing the coolant to run dry? I currently have no understanding of how the system is put together so don't know what connects to what, what feeds what, etc... All I know is that sound is NOT GOOD. Any help greatly appreciated. I appreciate the info I've given is a little convoluted: please be gentle, I've only had the boat for 6 days...
  15. Ahoy matey! I hope you can help me figure out what is wrong with this cursed water pump. The boiler works well enough on a low setting but as I raise the settings, it disrupts the flow of the water. As a result, the water comes out cold to warmish in the shower. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so here are 2 videos: Kitchen sink: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE-ZC6j4zLE Shower: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=faulty+narrowboat+pump You can see in the second video that it gets much worse in the shower.
  16. Our Shurflo Aqua King pump started leaking over a year ago, after which i isolated it. You will see from the photograph that we have two pumps, i think the other might be a Jabsco but am not on the boat until later today. The Shurflo pump deals with the flush water to the Mansfield Traveler, the other pump deals with everything else (except the shower, for which we have another pump located elsewhere). For the last year we've simply flushed the loo with water from a bottle but i now want to replace this pump. I've read a few of the threads on here and Shurflo don't seem to have a very good reputation and seem very prone to leaks. Additionally, they also seem to be impossible to source from the UK. Ebay and Amazon list pumps located in the US with very hefty carriage charges that would take the cost of the pump to about £160. However, i'm looking for an easy life atm, so would prefer a pump that's a straight swap rather than having to re-jig the pipework etc. Any suggestions would be welcome. One of the threads on here suggested that Shurflo's Trail King series, which are considerably cheaper, are satisfactory replacements for a narrowboat so am considering one of these unless anybody can come up with a better suggestion. I've also read on other threads talk of an accumulator; i haven't a clue what one of these looks like or whether we have one, maybe somebody can advise from the attached photographs.
  17. My water pump goes off intermittently - I mean, makes a quick burst of pumping noise once in a while (say, every 4 hours?). I usually turn it off at night for this reason. Is this normal? (I have heard of accumulators but my current set up doesn't have one). Surely pressure is being lost either forward (leak?) or back to the tank? No leaks anywhere... at the moment. AFAIK Perhaps this is why some of you have accumulators? Forgive my ignorance.
  18. Hi What is the best way to winterise the water pump on a raw water cooled JP3M? I've drained the water via the drain plug on the exhaust manifold and then the main crankcase via the value on the side. When I've come to drain the water pump, understand the freezing issue, I became concerned about the leathers drying out and if draining was actually a good idea, or if I need to protect the leathers whilst drained? Any advice on what is the best strategy for protecting the water pump in the winter is most appreciated. Thanks in advance Wayne (Tug Caggy)
  19. Hi, I am not a plumber so forgive me. We have an instant gas water heater, last night it ignited on its own and the water pump kept running. We can hear water running in the pipes, but can't find any leaks, thoughts and possible solutions welcome
