  1. My partner and I have inherited a 52ft canal boat from a relative. The past year we have enjoyed our time on the waterways however with a new baby due any day now, going through locks etc has been increasingly difficult with only one person. The boat has been left moored for the past 4months and is showing signs of wear from the lack of use. Does anyone know if it Is worth leasing the boat out or offering week holidays on it to strangers? If so how would we go about this, with insurance, others competence on the boat, etc? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We would rather not sell it but mooring costs etc will start mounting for something we just aren't using enough of
  2. Unjustifiable marina costs

Hello I am seeking advice in regards to some charges my marina has charged me £100 bringing HGV on site to deliver boat - however HGV was not met by anyone other than myself. £50 set up fee - nothing was set up when the HGV arrived and I was told to put in on the grass or find blocks of wood myself laying about the marina. 3 months rent - understandable and now selling fee. If I sell the boat on the marina I have to pay £100 despite the marina having no involvement in the sale at all. is this normal? Can I refuse to pay the marina any money after I make the sale?
  3. Hi, Just wondered whether you are allowed to Air ba nd b a room in your boat if you are living in it? Does this affect your license? Cheers, Will
  4. Hi all, (Please let me know if there is a better place/forum to put this post - Thanks!) As the title suggests, I am looking for long term accommodation aboard a boat. I will consider any boats in livable conditions, though a narrowboat seems like the most likely candidate. The boat would ideally be within London zones 1 to 3 (I work as an Operations Manager and my workplace is situated by London Bridge), although I am open to suggestions so feel free to make any. I am looking for a room at the very least, though taking an entire boat would be ideal (I can put down a sizable deposit £1500 to £2000). I was a sea cadet when I was a boy so I have more knowledge about boating than your average Joe. I have advanced knowledge of engines and experience maintaining and troubleshooting/fixing them. I have experience piloting speedboats, and a few other motorized vessels. Moving the boat every 2 weeks is not an issue for me. Please see my spareroom ad for more information on me. (Don't worry about my budget on there, that's negotiable) http://spareroom.co.uk/3576569 If you know anyone who is looking to rent, you have somewhere to rent, or you have helpful advice - Please contact me. I'll try to keep an eye on this post for replies, but you can reach me via louis@diecastproductions (dot) com or 07449 816 761. Thanks in advance! Sorry for the long post...
  5. Hi All, Hope you are well, I wonder if you can direct me where to look. On weekends I usually look for an escape to do some writing and have time away from the city noise. I was walking by Little Vince in Maidavale and the idea of having/hiring a parked boat there came to my mind. I was googling and ended up on your forum, I am basically not looking to sail or live full time on it; I am looking to hire a boat with decent furniture inside to have good time writing or just chill and have a nice meal. Where would I need to look to find something like this, do I have to buy a boat and rent a spot on the river somewhere, or I can find an arrangement to rent boat for weekends on regular basis? Your help is much appreciated Eihab
  6. For a little break and also to see if I could live on one full time, been looking on various sites then I came across this place so thought I would ask the experts. If you have one willing to hire out or know of places that maybe able help your help would be greatly appreciated, I am in the Birmingham area but can travel about. Thanks in advance
  7. Live in rental?

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I'm looking into buying a boat to live on. Until then I'm hoping to rent a boat to live on in London so I can get a feel for the water. Does anyone have a barge or boat for rent in the London area? I'm interested in both short term and long term rentals. I'm really handy, so could possibly help with things if necessary. I'd appreciate any advice as I'm a bit new to this! Thanks Mark
  8. Hi everyone, I currently live in a small village near the Kennet and Avon and Devizes. I have considered buying a boat for a great many years but my partner was always opposed to this. Due to our possible relationship breakdown, I am now seriously considering living on the canal. Having 2 fairly mature children I would like to stay close and help both them and my partner, trying to remain good friends if at all possible. The workshop for my Antique Restoration business is based at the family home and I nead to remain relatively near to this. I am not under any illusion as to the difference between summer/winter boating. Before I (hopefully only proverbially) "jump in", I desperately want to spend some time living on a boat. Does anyone know of an owner wishing to go away from the canal anywhere around this area (10 ish mile radius of SN10 3LF) in the next month or two? I would be flexible regarding times/dates etc. and want to have to do all the usual mundain chores required for living on the canal. I have some experience of narrowboats as far as steering and so on are concerned. I am responsible, clean, tidy and respectful of others' property. I can give references if required, including one or two from boat owners if need be. Please don't misunderstand this request; I'm trying to gain some experience before changing my lifestyle, I'm not running away from anything, not depressed, non smoker (recently reformed) and life is ok for now but I need to make a change. I hope someone can assist and look forward to hearing from anyone with ideas. Regards, Richard Powell
