  1. Hello All after moving a bit further north to explore a new area i^m looking for a mooring from Stafford Northwards, so when i get o boat for my days free can go out and get to a few pubs and back. More the choice the better. Would be nice if mooring is in easy access of M6 A50. Thank you

  4. Comments from members of this forum about the plight of Rod Taylor and his eviction from Poplar Dock Marina have made me question just how much unity there is now in the boating world and worse, how fragmented and dog eat dog we have become... The topic started with a straight forward post and has gone through so much back biting and frankly, self effacing "you bought a boat so you should expect this and think yourself lucky" it is now reminding me of, at best a Python sketch and at worst we should expect to be treated as Second Class Citizens.... I will declare now that I am fully in favour of regulation. I will take that further in that if a Marina operator is good then they have no fear of regulation. Any operator who says regulation may stop them trading should be stopped. Please comment on the topic and start your own if you want to contemplate your navel Andy
  5. I am possibly starting a new job in the new year, unfortunately it will be a 2 1/2 hr commute each way on a good run each day. I am considering moving my boat (currently on the K&A) up to a more local location and spending a few nights per week on the boat to cut down my travelling time. Does anyone know of suitable mooring locations close to J3 of the M5 preferably with electric hookup and parking I will also be looking for a suitable crainage point and contractor in the same locality that can handle a 42footer Any helpful info will be very much appreciated
  6. At a meeting at Wrenbury Village Hall last night the developers agent revealed plans to close Wrenbury Lift Bridge to boats from 8am - 9.30 am and from 4.30pm - 6pm. every weekday. We were told CRT supports this and the new marina in the centre of Wrenbury
  7. Hey all, In early January I bought an older widebeam (built in '74) that I'm currently in the midst of restoring. At the time, the boat was held in Shepley Bridge marina in Yorkshire, where (after the sale) the marina offered to black both the exterior and interior of hull (at a recommendation by the guy who undertook the safety survey.) Now, 6 months later, I've reached the point where I'm ripping up floorboards and rebuilding the interior, only to find that the the interior blacking they did consists of only as much as you can see when you lift the small hatches in the floor. Combined with pipes that water pipes that burst while the boat was in their care (the temperature caused them to burst - something I looked past at the time, as I wasn't sure whether it was firmly their responsibility to keep the boat warm during the sale), there are now various spots of rust throughout interior. This isn't a terrible problem - a big of grinding and painting - but I find it incredibly angering that something I paid for was, at best, half done. So, I was wondering whether anyone had any similar experience with them and whether they were known for doing this or whether it was something else. In every other respect, they seemed more than accommodating (going so far as to give me a hand moving the boat an hour or two upriver), so I'm not sure how far I should take this. Any thoughts or experience appreciated, Ryan The Dark Horse
  8. Got a surprise last week - my fault as it comes from my using an old copy of Nicholsons, but we passed a new marina on The Huddersfield Narrow, somewhere above Stalybridge. It's not marked in my edition of Nicholsons, and I neglected to do it at the time, so I cant remember exactly where it is, but I recall that there's a pub next to it.. so.. 1) Can anyone tell me where it is (ie between which two locks..) 2) There were absolutely no signs of any sort - except one right at the far side of the marina which appeared to say "private moorings" - though I could barely read it from the cut. Are there any visitor moorings or services (water, toilets etc..) available there ? If there are, it would be helpful to put a sign up by the canal so say so ! Had a great week going from Preston Brook to Wool Rd and back (..via The Stanley Arms at Patricroft twice..) though my only real comment would be the need for some nearside dredging as in several places, we were unable to get the boat any less that about 3 feet from the towpath when we tried to to moor above Roache's Lock - in fact after three attempts to moor, we gave up and went to Uppermill instead.
  9. Hi! Has anyone stayed at/live at Poplar Dock Marina? Please let me know your experience there if so :) x
  10. Firstly this is my first post in the community so hey! I am a recent graphic design graduate along with my girlfriend. After spending some time finding work that suites us both we decided to give a start up studio a go. One decision lead to another and we found our selves looking at Narrow boats. Assuming some how we can find the money through a loan or mortgage to get a Narrow boat, we were wondering if it would be practical to have a liveonboat that could double as a small design studio for us both. Not only does the lifestyle suite us down to a tee, but it could be a really nice, quirky way of setting up a new business (taking the 'studio' to potential new clients etc) which could be a great selling point. Obviously this raises lots of questions, -A wide boat would be best, however this limits our cruising -continuous vs marina -enough internet to keep us both online -would you need extra licensing? Ideally in the future we would love 2 boats, 1 designed as a studio and kitted out as such, and the other a live-on but obviously acquiring 1 boat straight out of uni is hard enough, never mind 2. If anyone has any advice on the idea, or Narrow boating in general it would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Alex
  11. Hi, This is my first post on the forum so Greetings! I'm a livaboard continuous cruiser who has been on my boat for just over 3 years. I had her blacked when I bought her but was not involved in the process. She is now a little bit overdue. I have 2 months off work and am looking to take her out the water and black her myself. I have time but am on a budget. I am looking for an affordable yard/marina where I can spend two weeks on the hard to take my time derusting and prepping the hull sides as well as the base plate before reblacking. I'm currently in West London but am prepared to travel for up to around 10 days per journey. I will need to live on the boat whilst she is on the hard. Does anyone have some suitable suggestions? The best I've found so far are Willowbridge Marina for DIY but I am hoping to find something a bit less costly. Base plate is not negotiable and I definitely need access to it. I'd prefer to be on the hard rather than a dry dock as I'm slower than most people at DIY stuff. I like to take more time but do a thorough job

  13. Hey, I've been looking into living on a narrowboat for around a year now after it being a life long dream! I am currently in the process of trying to secure a mooring spot in Manchester. I am struggling to find any websites or direct contacts too the marinas etc based in Manchester, in order to pop my name down on the waiting list or whatnot. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could advise me on the process of getting hold of a mooring spot in Manchester?! Any advice would be amazing Thanks Chloé
  14. Hello all! This is my first post - I imagine it may become the first of many! I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of having refits done at Springfield Marina in London (on the Lee river)? I'm getting my bathroom redone, and have been quoted at £312 per day (this is for two people to work on the refit). This seems pretty expensive but am struggling to get other quotes who fit in with my availability. Does anyone have any experience of having a refit done with Springfield? They aren't coming up smelling of roses with the current research I'm doing, but I remain hopeful! Many thanks in advance! Sophie
  15. Can you recommend a marina? For whatever purpose. I am going to buy a boat in a few months time, maybe this year or the beginning of next year, for example September, October this year or April, May next year. Which marinas in England (south of Lancaster) have a good range of pre-owned narrow boats? Where have you had good experiences when buying and using the other services of the marina. Which marinas offer a good service to people who moor their boat on them? I live in Spain but have family in the north west and south west of England, so would base my boat in those areas, I think. But I don't mind buying a boat in another part of the country. Do you think it is safer to buy from a marina? I will be very grateful for any help. Peter
  16. With apologies to the marina - I always thought notices like this were made up for the laughs: The pump out is presently out of order and waiting for parts to arrive. You will be advised once the pump has been fixed. The Marina apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.
  17. Hiya, I've read lots of posts ref linear moorings vs marina moorings etc. But wanted to ask some specifics that I've not seen answers to yet... I'm considering moving my boat from a marina in Newark and am considering the online moorings at Bleasby, just above Hazleford lock. All appears ok with very large piles etc but I do not know the Trent well enough to know its winter state. Should I stay in a marina setting am I more sheltered from adverse weather and high waters there etc? I had a preference for a mooring on the riverside rather than inside floating pontoon due to the size and my perhaps poor boat handling skills but I suspect I'd be more at risk from floating debris - again I don't know the Trent well enough to know if this is a reasonable risk. Also does anyone have any reviews of these moorings? Any thoughts please L & G? Thank you.
  18. Does anybody on here have any experience of this marina? It's at Rufford on the Rufford arm of the Leeds and Liverpool. It seems like a really lovely place but it would be nice to hear from anybody that has stayed there, or is there now. Thanks.
  19. Can anyone recommend a marina near Halifax? We're moving house soon and I would like to have the boat within an hour's drive. I'm looking for a quiet location with showers and laundrette etc. Currently very happy in Yelvertoft but it's time for a move and Yelvertoft is a three-hour drive away. A good social scene and a nearby pub with real ale are also important.
  20. If the new marina in Wrenbury village centre between Church Lift Bridge and Wrenbury Lift Bridge gets planning permission and is built up to 200 feet of moorings could be lost. This is a shame as its peaceful towpath moorings with lots of facilities for boaters including a shop, buses, 2 pubs.
