  1. Where can a POL to POL hose for decanting LPG bottles be bought please?
  2. Hi, I have had a look through pretty much every post on here and I can't find anything related to this so I hope that it is okay to ask it here. Anyway, I just want to know what peoples opinions/advice are, or even better than that, whether anyone knows whether or not what I want to achieve is doable. So, I want to run my gas pipe from a starboard stern locker, through the bulkhead with a fitting or gland and then (this is where I want the advice/knowledge) run the piping up to the ceiling level behind the wall lining, then run it external to the ceiling along a cable tray (that will also have an electric lighting ring servicing the kitchen in it) and down a column (with a hinged inspection door) into a kitchen island. I am intending to use CSST piping to do the entire run without fittings along the length. I hope that makes sense. If not feel free to ask any questions or me to try and clarify it a wee bit. As far as I can see the pipe would be checkable along its entire length and would be secure. And before you ask why... we are going for the industrial look! Thanks in advance Gregg
  3. I know gas powered fridges are fitted to some boats but are new installations approved for use in boats nowadays? If so are there any particular safety issues (for burning, ventilation, whatever)? I have it in mind to use Dometic RM5310 gas/12v fridge, or similar, which might run on 12v when engine is running and gas when not. All comments gratefully accepted.
  4. I'd like to purchase a generator I can run off one of my normal boat 13kg propane gas cylinders. Around 2KVA should be plenty. One of its tasks will be to power a grinder / sander for stripping paint, etc., so automatic load control would be good, ie. the engine speeds up when it's under load and drops back to idle on no load. Something nice and quiet would be good too! Do you have experience of any makes and models please? A good place to buy would also be really helpful. Cheers.
  5. Hi all Kitchen refit is going well, I am changing my existing kitchen layout from a both sides "walk through" format to an "L" shape on the Port side. At the moment, I have 12v/240v/Gas under the gunnel on the Starboard side and 12v/240v/Water under the gunnel on the Port. Is there any reason why i can't have gas, water and electric all under the same gunnel? i'll leave a 12v and 240v loom under the starboard too. Any advice for doing this? Do the lines need to be isolated from each other? thank you! Jess
  6. Is there any reason we shouldn't be using a domestic cooker converted to lpg on our wide beam? Flavel specifically mentions it won't guarantee their cooker mlb51nds if used on boats (even mentions houseboats). Rona
  7. Hello! I'm in the process of scrolling through the internet looking for an oven and I need some help. I have decided to go for a single gas oven with a separate stove, purely because it saves a bit more space. The 'caravan cookers' I've seen don't look great so I'm searching for standard domestic ovens but my problem is they all seem to have 240v grills. So does anyone know of any single ovens without the electric grill or will I have to consider a 'caravan cooker'??? Thanks!!
  8. We have a Spinflo HB14000 6kW hob with four gas burners and a Country Leisure Midi Prima 3.1kW oven with a separate grill on our narrow boat. We find the gas oven is difficult to keep alight even though it has flame failure protection. We also find the oven setting needs to be low to prevent burning food. Does anyone have suggestions to prevent this or install a different oven? Thanks. Alan
  9. HI All, HNY! We have a vanette oven and grill. when we bought the boat in the summer we were told by the previous owner that it needed a new thermocouple. 6 months on and i finally bought one and fitted it! Sadly though it still doesn't work!! Bugger. It doesn't matter how long I keep the button pushed in, when I release it the grill turns off. Frustrating, especially as this probably means that the thermocouple i just pulled out was still working. Does anyone have any ideas what might be the problem? The thermocouple is new so nice and clean and no fat/oil deposits. The tip of it is in the flame of the burner when it is on. Not sure what else I can do? Cheers!
  10. hi all can we use one of these on our NB safely? http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/mini-heater-hose-and-reg-p162735 we have a problem with the back of the boat never warming up, even when our stove makes most of the boat pretty toasty. we're thinking of getting some existing and currently redundant rads joined up to a combi boiler or webasto/eberspacher, but want something to keep the chill off our bedroom and bathroom in the meantime for short periods of time (maybe an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening). if something like this is no good could someone suggest an alternative?? cheers! mike
  11. Hi everyone, im hoping somone might be able to help. ive recently bought a narrowboat and have just changed the gas bottles after running out. the oven and hot water are working fine since changing over the gas but the fridge (a SIBIR) will not turn on. I’ve been trying for a few days now but still no luck. The fridge was working perfectly on gas until the bottle ran out. i have been pressing and holding down the gas knob at the bottom of the fridge (far right in photo) and then pressing the ignition button (left in photo). Occasionsly I get a spark but the pilot does not stay on. I have tried adjusting the middle dial to every setting but doubt this would make any difference bevause that sets the fridge temperature when turned on. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
  12. Our Thetford oven is very slow to get up to higher temperatures. Is this a known issue?
  13. Hi all, I'm looking for a gas safe engineer to install a cooker and hob, any recommendations, currently moored up in Uxbridge. Cheers
  14. Hi, Have been quoted >£700 to have new gas pipe fitted from gas locker to new cooker and replacement Morco heater (approx 10feet away) They won’t connect to Morco but have no issues installing as far as so we can then do the rest. This includes parts inc bubble tester. It it was a fair chunk more than I was expecting, but maybe I was naive, does this sound like a fair price?
  15. Can anyone tell me why the traditionally-shaped copper olive (ferrule) was replaced with the tubes of copper that all manufacturers of brassware now pass off as olives on smaller sized fittings? (See photo). With traditional olives (upper one in the photo) you can get a perfect seal by tightening a compression fitting by hand plus a quarter turn. The lower one requires you to tighten a full further turn just to get the pipe to be gripped and then some to get a good seal as they're not tapered as they should be. I've found myself having to overtighten everything to ensure a good gas seal.
  16. Hi All, So, after a year of living aboard a boat that only generates hot water via running the engine and slowly warming up water in the calorifier which is all over in a hot minute. Ive decided that its time for some home improvements, mainly in the guise of hot water. My initial thought was Webasto, but I read very recently that they don't like to work as just water heaters and need to do central heating as well. Lovely in times like this but I don't particularly want to be heating the boat via rads in the middle of the summer every time I want to do the washing up. Other thing is the quite high cost or purchase and what ever parts of the install I cannot do myself plus regular maintenance. Second thoughts a Morco gas boiler, but from what I see in the specs of the ones I've been looking at they only heat the water to 25C above the water temperature. Thats just not hot enough for most hot water requirements. Secondly I heard that BSS is wanting to phase out gas from boats so is investing is a gas boiler perhaps not wise. Immersion heater, to be honest I've done little to no research. Just the huge power output has put me off even considering it as an option. However knowing that my battery bank needs replacing and a new solar array is on the shopping list maybe it could work. I guess what I'm asking is what from the above is myth, what people are using, what you find the pros and cons of your set ups are and how much they have cost you to purchase/install. I've got a fair bit of cash to spend on the batteries the solar and the water heating I just want to make sure I spend it wisely and don't regret it in a few months years down the line! Look forward to hearing what you all have to say. Thanks in advance.
  17. Hi All, Has anyone used this type of pigtail to save using a spanner ? Thanks John
  18. Hello, Ok so I have a leisure GRB6GVK gas cooker (which is new to me) but I cannot seem to get the bottom oven to work! Very annoying ! It has been converted to LPG as it was from a house. There are two ovens and the top smaller oven makes a noise when the gas is coming out so I know it is working even before I light it but I cannot hear anything from the bottom oven (ie no gas coming out?) any suggestions ? Perhaps its something simple but I have had a good look inside and at the back, anyone have any suggestions ?? Any suggestions appreciated I realise it is quite a specific question. Thanks Martin
  19. Hi All, 1st time post - so hopefully I don't upset anyone I am hoping for some advice and ideally a professional opinion regarding the routing of the gas pipe on our boat. It runs down the inboard exposed surface of the gunwale, so it's possible to drop something on it, against it or even step on it. Have a look at the attached pic and tell me if I'm being over cautious! thanks for taking a look! BretttT
  20. I'm just about to try and put the 3/8" gas pipe in place in readiness for the gas man - I'm wondering if anyone has tips on working with it? Obviously it's in a roll at the moment - I think I saw somewhere about straightening by drawing through a hole drilled in a bit of wood? Or any other tips! ta,
  21. I've been reading all the threads about gas on this forum, as my mind now turns to getting my hob and oven hooked up. My intention is to get hold of a single length of pipe, run it from lockers to appliances, all properly clipped up etc, then get someone to connect all the hoses, valves, regulators etc, and test and certify. As I understand it I will need :The correct regulator(s), bubble test, hose, bulkhead fitting(s) 2x13kg bottles. 3/8" or 1/2" annealed copper pipe to BS EN1057. Also isolator and hose for oven and a tee to the hob. (I'd like the hob done in pipe without hose as it is accessible). But I'm unclear as to the arrangement at the gas bottle end of things. I have 2 gas lockers (one port one starboard, astern). I don't know how they would both connect to the supply pipe. Or what happens with changeover valves etc? I saw that someone was able to calculate size of pipe and regulators required - well I have a hob with 1x3kw, 1x1.75kw, 1x1kw burners, and the oven is stated as 2.5kw oven, 2.3kw grill but 2.5kw total (I presume you can't oven and grill together though it is twin cavity). The length of run between the nearest locker and the appliances is approximately 10-12 metres. I'm hoping to run it a couple inches up from the floor, all the way through various areas to the kitchen. The hob comes with an lpg adapter nozzle and three lpg jets, the oven is a Belling made especially for LPG only. Just trying to figure it all out at this stage, get an idea of cost and what's involved before going ahead. Thanks for any info.
  22. Hi you lovely bunch! I'm designing a new galley for my boat and I was wondering if there is a safe distance between a gas cooker and a mutli-fuel stove I should consider? Should I aim to keep them as far away from each other as possible? Thanks in advance
  23. Hi I've been living aboard for over a year now and each of my 13kg Propane bottles has lasted about 3 months. Pretty good! However, the most recent bottle has only lasted one month - pretty poor! I have a Rinnai instant water heater on board and the only thing I've done differently is to leave the pilot light for this heater on permanently. Prior to this, I would only turn the pilot light on when I had a shower or did some laundry or some washing up. Obviously, having the pilot light on permanently will use more gas up, but I can't believe that it would use 2 month's worth of gas over a period of one month - if you see what I mean! Of course, I could have been given a bottle that was only half full or something but I've been reassured that the stockist simply takes deliveries and has empty bottles collected. It's unlikely I've been deliberately short-changed. So, does anyone have some idea of how much gas having a pilot light on 24/7 might use? Photo of Rinnai with pilot light lit attached! Many thanks
  24. Hallo, We are renovating currently and in dire need of replacing the gas pipework. The current stuff has been removed but it was soldered together (!!). We have all the new pipework but just need someone qualified to fit it together, hook up our boiler and possibly convert our range to LPG (currently natural gas), although we could do this ourselves and can live without the oven for now if necessary. I'm aware there are a few threads on this topic but they're quite out of date. Cheers!
  25. Hi all. I am having a re-fit of our 57" reverse layout semi-trad narrowboat at the moment. We have had a gas bottle container in the metal box in the corner of the stern deck above the engine bay (it's where your left hand would be if the person at the tiller reached down and forward i.e. forward of where the throttle is) since we moved on. A gas engineer came to check out set up and said that we couldn't have the gas bottle there as gas could sink down from there into the living quarters. For a quick check of the regulations, it seems to say that the positioning is fine, as long as it is in a container that is vapour-proof. Does anyone have any further information on what is and isn't allowed here, as I'd rather not spend the £1000 that gas engineer is quoting to reposition the gas bottle in a bow locker and re-run gas piping through the whole of the boat to get to the gas cooker stern?
