  1. For as long as I can remember I have wanted to live on a narrowboat and cruise the waterways of the UK. I can now realise that dream as I am no longer held down by work, relationship, pets or finances. Trouble is, where to start?! I have come to realise that I know nothing! I need to find someone who is looking for an adventure and has time on their hands to do it. That someone may already have a boat and need crew or company or may want to share the cost of a boat or just crew on a boat I buy. So many options! Probably the place to start is with finding who is willing to do a trip around most of the navigable waterways of the UK. I need someone who can pilot the boat as it is something I cannot do. I prefer the company of women but I am not looking for a romance here just a skipper! I am 61 and an interesting character I am told! Please get in touch if you think this could be you, all options are open.
  2. Hello all, There are a few posts about redoing aluminium windows but just wanted to double check with the more experience that my plan made some sense and for some advise regarding particular products. I have aluminium windows as per photos and what with the recent rainy weather I found at least two of them leaking pretty badly ! they are 10years old or so. (I have owned the boat about a year and a half) THE PLAN: - Remove all wood framework inside - Unscrew windows from outside (drill out any that have rounded) - Prize away windows trying to keep from bending, using a pallet knife to break seal - Rub down with sandpaper and Fertan any rusty metal behind (wasn't sure if I would need to paint after Fertan?) - Clean windows up, remove any old silicone - Use a new rubber window seal (need some help here...) *Not sure which particular product to use ! Midlands seems to stock a few types? Could someone confirm which product to use? These were the three products I couldn't seem to figure out which one to go for.... Product Code: CW-052, Product Code: C120, Product Code: CW-015 *What do I stick this to? window or boat? (I am assuming its one sided sticky) *Not sure what to do at corners, presumably I cut this into 2 long and 2 short lengths the same as window, then do I mitre the corners as best I can? - Ok, then re-screw window back in, not sure what the screws go into presumably self tapping into the boat steel ?? - Then finally ,apply small bead of silicon around window frame *Anyone recommend a sealant for this, heard mixed things about sikaflex and I understand its important to get a marine one. So... Have I missed anything?? Any tips at all really appreciated as I am a little nervous about taking my windows out, I am going to start with one ! Many thanks in advance, Look forward to reading your opinions. Martin Photos below: Above is window from outside. Above is screws attaching windows Above is more screws from outside that look like they might be a pain to get out :/ Above is wooden framework inside boat that I was planning to remove first !
  3. Liveaboard in Yorkshire

Hello, I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm in the initial stages at looking at living permanently aboard, but before I go any further I need to know if its possible to live in either York or Leeds city centre. York is preferable, as close to the city as possible although happy to go to the west of York. Leeds would need to be central. I would love any advice you can give me, been trying to do some research online however struggling with a lack of links on google... is this because it's just not possible (I really hope not!!) Thanks in advance Chloe
  4. Hi all, this is my first post so please be gentle. Me and my girlfriend are about to buy a narrowboat. we know wat we are after but don't know which brokers to trust. Over the past year we have visited many of the well known ones and we sort of understand how it all works. But we have heard about horror stories! Can anybody give us advice on who is the least likely to take us for a ride and who we need to avoid. We know we want to go with a broker as we don't want all the admin and potential risk, but we don't know who to trust. I might be being a little paranoid, if so then tell me that! Haha. Any other advice about brokers would be extremely helpful. Thanks everyone. Jamie
  5. Newbie, Advice Needed!

Hi, first off thank you all for the wealth of information on the forum. I have been reading as much as I can over the past few months, and the knowledge I have gained has been invaluable! Thanks! I have been to look at this boat http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/Canal-Narrow-Boats-for-sale/lees-narrowboats-50-cruiser-stern/98300?redirm=1#MxW7gcrVuyeIZo64.97 and I am considering going to see it a second time and possibly making an offer subject to survey. To my untrained eye it is generally in ok condition, there are a few cosmetic things I would need to do as I am planning to live aboard. I viewed it on my own when everything was disconnected so I have not seen everything working, but I have been told everything works, and I would obviously ask to see everything working on a second viewing.. I would be very grateful if anyone would be able to have a look at the advert and share any thoughts or opinions they have about the boat, and its suitability for living aboard, probably continually cruising for much of the time. I know there is only so much you can tell without actually seeing it, but if there is anything you think I should be looking out for, or questions I should be asking the seller? any and all advice gratefully received! Thanks in advance, John
  6. Hello All, I am new to this forum and hoping to glean some useful buying advice / information please. I have wanted to own, and live aboard, a narrowboat for some years now (having enjoyed many holidays / long weekends afloat in the past), and have now decided (I think!) to take the plunge and buy my own vessel. I was just wondering if you could give me any advice, positive or negative, about particular manufacturers; specifically , I want to know if it is worth spending more money on what might possibly be an older boat but one that is apparently made by a better / more reputable constructor. I came across two similar boats that I was interested in on a recent internet search; one was a 2004 Liverpool Boats 57 ft with an advertised price of around £50k, and the other was a 1999 Warble 57ft with an advertised price of nearer £80k. Both boats were similarly fitted-out with good quality interiors, and both looked to be in good tidy condition. I understand that a 1999 Ferrari or Rolls-Royce will be worth more than a 2004 Fiat or Toyota, but what I don't quite understand is this - are they not effectively the same thing (i.e. 57ft of steel), but with a different interior? My simplistic approach would say that if I took my Toyota and got the interior done by the same people who do Ferrari interiors would it be worth Ferrari money? I guess not! ;-) I have been told that the quality of the steelwork (i.e. the preparation and the general fabrication skills) would be of a much better standard on the more expensive vessel, but I would assume that fundamentally they are probably both made from the same steel that might well have come from the same mill, so am I basically paying another £30k for some neater welding?! Please pardon my ignorance, as I am wholly new to the idea of boat ownership, but I would welcome any useful information or opinions on this subject before I either end-up wishing I had spent the extra money on a 'better' boat, or end-up wondering why I wasted all that extra money! ;-) Thanks in advance. Andrew.
  7. Advice on this boat please

Could anybody if they get a minute have a look at this boat I found on the Internet, I like the interior and the details are a little vague at the moment, as apparently it has just come onto the market, I contacted the marina and it's not with them at the moment they think it will be priced around 28K. Does anybody know anything about it. Many thanks http://www.nationwidenarrowboatsales.com/viewlisting2.php?id=283
  8. looking for some opinions and advice

Hi everyone, we are new to the community and new to boating, so looking for some advice on a boat we are considering buying (for a small business with commercial mooring; not live aboard). Before viewing the boat we were advised (by boating friends, sadly not local so couldn't come along) to look out for rust on the waterline and in the bilge. There seems to be rust in both areas (see pics), though we're unsure how superficial. The owner unfortunately has not had a survey done, though it has been out for reblacking about three years ago and he says should be slightly overdue another three coats now (Comastic). It's a 55ft 1999 narrowboat which will also be needing a new engine. Obviously we'd be looking to get a full survey done before commiting anything, but my question is, based on these issues, is it worth it at all or would it be better (particularly given our inexperience) to walk away (or possibly try to haggle down substantially)? We're not shy of doing the work, but would like to pay a fair price and know what we might be walking into. Perhaps estimated price ranges (for boat or work) would also be useful, though I know this might not really be enough info to go on. Thanks in advance! Attached are some pics we took of the rusty areas:
  9. I'm very new to the boat would, I know very little. Any information would be helpful I'm an architect student and a design consultant. I had a friend of mine who has just brought a 12ft widebeam and it's between 50-60ft long, he asked me to design the interior for him. I was shocked at the space inside and after talking about how much the shell cost him and how much it costs to live on the water, I fell in love with the idea. I love small spaces, but i dislike narrow spaces, so a widebeam is perfect for me, but I don't see the point in having an overly long boat. I wanted to be informed or advised is there anything wrong or disadvantage of having a widebeam only 30ft long? My friend tells me that will be a maximum of 24ft living space. I have put this in a CAD programs and come up with a few designs. I believe I could easily live comfortable and happily within this space. I'm worried about electric and water consumption. I like to shower every day. I also pretty much spend all day working on my pc and laptop, I'm worried the tv/monitor will consume to much power. Any advice or any information will help. I don't plan of paying for mooring, I like the idea of traveling up and down a lock each week or two
  10. Hi - We have two friends from New York visiting us for the last week in July. We plan to spend 4/5 days on the canals. Over the last 10 years we have been on several holidays including Avon Ring, Middlewich to Llangollan, Macclefield , Mon and Brec, Norfolk Broads, and around the Crick area (where good friends keep their own boat). We have never cruised during school holidays, and we are concerned that we would find the most popular routes busy and frustrating. We'd plan to travel for 6 hours a day; so about 100 miles/locks for the planned holiday. From our limited experience our candidates for these 4/5 days would be: 1. The Lancaster Canal, (though the complete absence of locks is not in its favour) 2. Sowerby Bridge up to Todmordon on the Rochdate Canal. 3. 4/5 day on the South Oxford canal (spending a day in Oxford) Will the Rochdale Canal as busy as those I listed above? Sadly Scotland is out as it's too far in the time we have. Any advice would be gratefully received, Mike and Evey
  11. Can anyone identify my boat?

Hello there, Thanks to all who helped with my other two posts regarding the rebuild of my first narrowboat, Silflay. The engine is all back together now thanks to everyones good advice.. My new mission is to find out who made her! Silflay is a mid seventies 50 ft cruiser stern with a similar age lister sr3. her registration number is something like (i dont have it here, its on the boat) 46959 but I have checked on Jim sheads site to no avail.. If I can work out how to post an image or two could I please ask you wise folk to cast an eye over them to see if you can see any signs of who may have made her.. I am prepared to think she was privately built because she does have a low ceiling height that seems odd for a company built boat. any help at all will be gratefully received.. thanks.. s
