Hello, its been a very long time since I posted anything on the forum, however, if like me you have an Isuzu engine where the hour counter built into the tachometer gauge (which is made by a company called Siemens VDO) - and the display has gone blank then I've got a fix! These tachometers are rebadged alot, and seem to be similar on Vetus, Volvo Penta and several other brands. Inside the hour counter it will be counting perfectly well, its just the LCD display thats gone. It uses a process known as "COG" - chip on glass, and then a tiny ribbon cable to connect to it - its the ribbon cable on the glass that breaks over time. I've managed to reverse engineer the LCD signals, so I can get a display working again, its not quite finished yet but wondered if anyone else would be interested in it?- 79 replies

This is my first post so I would like to take this opportunity to say hello and say thanks as this is a very informative forum. As spring is around the corner I am starting to tackle some of the outstanding jobs that I have been putting off since we bought the boat. One of these jobs is dealing with the engine instrument panel. This is how it should look: Our panel however looks like this: As you can see it needs 'some' work after years of being weathered. I have acquired a new VDO rev/tach lens and found a source for 52mm VDO replacement lenses. I'm fairly confident I can change those with a little research and patience. What I am a little unsure of is if I can get my hands replacement indicators/stop switch or the covers for them. I've looked on numerous on-line chandlers but have not had any luck, maybe it's my search terms? Can anyone offer me any advise on replacement parts? Once I've got the gauges, buttons, indicators and ignition finished the next task is to build myself a cover, not completely sure how I'm going to do that but that is entirely another job. Hi. I have replaced the head gasket on my Isuzu 42 (see previous post). It defiantly was blowing upon inspection (due to a leaking hose and loss of coolant) We had the head skimmed, new bolts and genuine parts. The engine seems to be running fine except it's slow heating up. I suspect the thermostat is possibly sticking open as I remember the RCR engineer last summer showing me how the thermostat opens and closes by the temperature gauge. My question is, where do I get a cheaper thermostat other than the £50 plus genuine one I've seen on EBay. Are thermostats like filters. Common parts but large variation in price? Cheers. Rob
