  1. Escape The Rat Race is run by Alex who is an ex-priest I believe. Might be able to give you a good rate?
  2. Sorry, the mechanic who fixed it for me told me about the 3 filters and that the one seems to be often overlooked (it was choked) but I cannot now remember which and where. I believe it is the last one in the line though. My engine is the 4.14 of about 2005 so this might not apply to you anyway but the symptoms sounded familiar. John
  3. My boat is let out while I'm away so it must have been done prior to my picking it up. I did check the prop for fouling but did not pick up that it was bent until I specifically looked for it. The boat was running OK just noisy and a vibration so I did not expect such a major problem ... obviously in future I will check the prop more carefully, hence this warning for others. John
  4. Hi, I had a similar problem a couple of years back. In my case one of the filters was clogged - there are THREE fuel filters and one of them is often overlooked in services apparently. At tickover all was well but at higher revs it would be ok for a while and then die down to tickover, after a while the revs could be increased again and then it would die again after a short while etc. Might be worth looking at? John
  5. Just some information that might help someone! My engine etc is Vetus but this probably applies to all setups. Recently I had cause to take my boat in for a check since vibration and noise were becoming apparent. Also there was water starting to drip from the prop at the stern gland. On inspecting the prop it was found that one of the flutes was badly bent. When the boat was taken out of the water for replacement of the prop it was found that this damaged prop and/or the collision that caused it had also damaged the prop shaft, rear shaft bearing, drive plate and gearbox! The rear bearing was oval and hence the water dripping, the prop shaft was slightly bent, the gearbox was noisy and had lots of slack (a 6 month old box) and the drive plate was noisy although it looked OK. After replacing all of the above except for the Driveplate we set off only to find that there was still noise and vibration! The Driveplate was changed for a new 'universal' plate and we set off again. Still noise and vibration... So after discussion with various authorities we changed the Driveplate for a new R and D design - problem solved - noise gone and vibration reduced considerably. So - my conclusions are that the prop needs checking regularly for damage since it can cause damage all the way through the drivechain and that the Driveplate needs to be the correct one for the drivechain. 6. I can now confirm that a 57' can be turned ( winded) at the water point! Only a couple of feet to spare with the nose on the concrete but a little further towards the lock should allow 60' just since the cut opens slghtly going towards the lock. Pity about the boat in the way - why do commercial boats always seem to be in the way!! By the way I used turning point since that covers winding holes and other points, whereas winding points does not necessarily cover other points at which a boat can turned/ winded. Perhaps winding points does cover all possible points, I'm not sure? John
  7. Turning point/Winding hole whats in a name? Thanks guys, that was quick and just what I needed! Many thanks. John
  8. Can anyone advise me about turning at SB. I can see from the map that there is a turning point just past the tunnel coming from Gayton but the moorings seem to be beyond that point. I am hoping to visit and then return to Gayton but would rather not have to go through the locks only to turn and go through them all again! Looking at Google maps the area just short of the first lock seems wide enough to wind a 57' but is it? Is it even allowed, I see boats moored there. Any advice would be welcome. John

    cruiser stern

Thanks for the replies. The panels (hatches) are aluminium chequerboard and act as sounding boards despite 1" 'padding' stuck on the underneath. The problem with sticking stuff underneath the panels is that it will still leave gaps around the edges for sound to come through. I was thinking that a solid rubber mat might give mass and also cover the gaps round the hatches - that would also stop a lot of rain entering the engine hole when a leaf gets stuck over an exit hole while also providing a warmer surface in Winter. Thanks again, John
  10. My cruiser stern is large and has two lift up aluminium panels for access to the Vetus engine below. The engine is quite noisy and I would like to reduce the transmitted noise! I have added foam draught-excluder round the bearing edges of the panels and that has helped but I have been considering a large rubber mat to cover the panels (overlapping the edges). I am thinking that this would help in 2 ways - it would stop quite a lot of the rain getting into the engine room (although the draught-excluder has really done that) and it would reduce the noise. Has anyone experience of doing this and does it help? If it does then what is recommended and where do I get it? Thanks in advance, John
  11. Thanks for the responses! Double the cost in 12 months!!! Someones making a healthy profit I suspect. Some questions: 1. From all I've read 3 has better coverage of the canals, that is why I have used 3 in the past, but has this changed? Anyone had experience of EE when cruising? 2. Can a 4g sim be used in a 3g Huawei modem? 3. The 12gb 12 month sim - can this be used as and when needed or is it 1gb a month, anyone know? I have heard conflicting ideas on this and the 3 site does not make it clear. 4. Perhaps a 12 month contract would work out cheaper even if restricted to 5gb a month - 3x5gb = 15gb for 3 months vs 12gb prepaid over 3 months (about 70BP)? Thanks again, John
  12. I am sure this has been done to death but I cannot find anything recent. I am going to be boating for about 10 weeks and need to connect my modem for internet. In the past I have used '3' 3gig sims which were valid for 3 months, I cannot seem to find them now and the prices seem to have shot up for the ones that I can find! Can anyone point me in the right direction, or make a suggestion for alternatives, please? I need about 6 gig for the period I think. Many thanks, John
  13. http://etrr.co.uk/ They might be able to help at a reasonable price although 3 months might be too short. Good Luck John

  15. Thanks for the replies. Sounds like a terrestrial would be best for me then. John
