  1. First I know very little about engines so this reply is a bit limited to say the least. Early days yet as I have only spoken to marine engineers over the phone. The problem as I see it Exhaust throwing out oil all over the canal. If you switch the fuel off the engine keeps going.(very difficult to stop the engine) I am told the engine may be running on oil out of the sump, This is bourne out by the oil level in the sump reducing in level. I appreciate everyones advice and I am investigating all the options offered. But my main point was if you buy a so called new boat how old are the fittings in it and are the guarantees still current. How many purchasers of new boats are aware of this. Sorry if this is repeating my self. Must say I have gained a great deal of advice from this forum which has been invaluable in my intial days of narrow boating
  2. Bought a new boat in Oct 2008. Just had a major problem with my Isuzu engine. Found out the guarantee for the engine started when it was originally fitted into boat shell by Liverpool boats in 2007. The boat was fitted out professionally by another boat company whom I purchased it off. The engine has less than 100 hours. I wonder if other boaters have had this problem ie guarantee run out on engine before they purchased a new boat. In defence of the boat fitter they are doing there best to help me out but I think it came as a bit of a shock to them that the guaranttee ran out with Isuzu before they sold it to me. Been in touch with HMI but they say any work on engine will have to be paid for. A salutory lesson for me (and dammed expensive) No doubt you will let me know your experiances.
  3. Happy New Year everyone. Stuck in at home due to snow fall !!!!!!!!! I have to admit I am a keen angler, keen Narrow Boater, and keen walker (not been on a bike for a while). Im sure we have all met people from these catagories who could have an arguement in an empty room. I say lifes to short just get on with what you enjoy and ignore the killjoys of this world they wiill always be ther dont give them the satisfaction of a confrontation. Phew I feel better for that roll on the summer.
  4. Peter Hopley is your man. I had a brand new boat surveyed which had a number of faults even though it had been ok'd by the sellers surveyor but most important the boat was 6 inches short thus saving me annual cost on licence fee. Would comment that the boat seller put all things right at no cost to me !
  5. Please remember not every one is as knowledgeable about NBs as a lot of the people who have replied to the original post. I bought a brand new NB and still had it surveyed. When you have a survey you depend on the persons report 100% if you know nothing about NBs like me. If a surveyor says there is a problem you tend to beleive them. In house purchase surveys you either Put a cost on the works and reduce price Put all the works right Take a risk if you fell in love with the house and ignore the survey. Go and find another property PS after 9 months ownership and 18 months reading this forum I have a bit more savvy in NBs can put oil, water in engine fuel in correct tank start engine moor up etc what else is ther to know ?????????????????????????????
  6. A couple of fit young lads on a push bikes could cover a lot of ground. Few quid an hour plus reward, they'll be as keen as mustard to find it. Good idea anybody on bikes but only to locate boat and observe while reporting location. No challenges to the crew as wether genuine hirers or theives there could be a nasty incident. I appreciate with the constabularys manpower /holidays etc the observer may need a weeks rations !!!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. If the boat was sited at 13.30 hrs on 15/3/09 less than 48 hrs ago was it in its original livery and was Que Sera Sera lettering still on the boat ? Or did the spotter recognise it via some other feature ? If original livery then should be easy to spot and would suggest more detailed inspections for craft Nos etc should be carried out by proffessionals (police!) or else we could be discussing a more seriouse incedent.
  8. I have read thro many topics on this forum to try gain an understanding of narrowboating which has been of great help and I have now have my own NB so this is an area I am very much a novice. Here goes! I have been a course angler for over 50 years and been on the match circuit for around 30 years so I will try and explain a little about my sport. Firstley lets agrree in any sport or pastime there will be people that are just unpleasant ignorant or just plain selfish. I and my fellow anglers would not want to be associated with with some people who own a fishing rod and call them selves anglers. I will confine my comments to canal fishing. I belong to a club with over 8000 members one of the largest individual clubs in the UK there are larger amalgamations ie London and Birmigham AA. Angling costs to not come compare with NB costs and the majority of anglers are aware that without the boating community there would be no canals to fish. Canal matches years ago 60s/ 70s would often run into excess of 100 anglers all paying money into the pools (£5/10) which was paid out to the top 4 weights (not numbers of fish) together with smaller section winner prizes (every say 15 anglers). On a canal match today 30 anglers would be a big match most likely to be club matches of 10/15 anglers. All the big money has gone to commercial angling complexes ( hole in the ground filled with water and stocked with fish) where access and facilities are good no dogs no bikes no pedestrians and yes no boats. When I say Big money max £200 for first place down to £25 for a section win. There are exceptions to this level of prize money but very rare. Average cost to enter a match excluding purchase of tackle around £20/30 plus travelling. Not really a money thing at club level assuming your lucky enough to win the odd match. Match anglers will almost certainly be using a pole to fish with not a rod and line threfore they do not cast. This is risky to generalise on but rod and line anglers a likely to be occasional anglers (pleasure anglers) and a small minority of those will have no respect for the sport or any one else come to that and I would suggest that these are the trouble makers boaters meet on occasions. Phew thats enough I could go on but this is more than enough to prompt a rply or two. Sorry just one more point pole fishing is very accurate and the fish move away from the angler hence fishing the far bank
  9. Thanks for the offer. Not going until july as we have a wedding in the family which has taken over our lives and put our first years cruising on the back burner (its wonderful having 3 daughters 2 grand daughters and a wife dont know how to make boys) We also live in Macc
  10. Never thought of height restrictions ! looked up lengths and widths of locks etc to check my boat will fit. Do you measure the height of the boat from the water line to its highest point above to give you a boat height for tunnels bridges etc?
  11. Thanks will contact Martin before I set off if I know how to contact him Tel Email ?. I see your on the Shannon ? I have cruised some of the shannon and erne. on hire boats Carrick Craft I have a place in Tarmonbarry Co roscommon so over there quite a bit. Have a small aluminium fishing boat which I use on the shannpon in that area (mainly fishing)
  12. Thanks. Anything tips on this trip? Me and the wife are both 60 but reasonable fit still playing active sports !
  13. Well here goes my first post. I have been viewing your site as a guest for over 12 months. The information and help I have gained from posts links etc ( I have been through them all) has been invaluable. So a big thanks to every one. Try to keep it short. I bought my first NB in July 08 57"- 3"semi trad (my surveyor measured it) I did not know what a semi trad was till I read this forum! The boat is new but the surveyor says its a budget boat Liverpool hull lots of MDF but it gaves us the layout we wanted at the price we could afford (well we did stretch ourselves a bit but you do when you waited for years to have one) Only moved boat from Northwich to its mooring at Bosley top lock so still lots of learning. Carried out a few ideas off the forum ie locked up my fuel and water nothing to complicated. Hope to start cruising later this year. Going North first Family in Huddersfield probably a bit of a challenge from info I have read but no pain no gain.
