  1. Hi David, I think you are doing the best thing in talking about the illness. My father in law died of lung cancer in October and we are still very sad about it. Talk to your family and friends as much as you can. Remember all the good times and be possitive. There are lots of people in remission and I'm sure an old boater like you can beat this. Good luck Martin & Carole
  2. Another reason for the now increased attendance at water incidents is the very unfortunate death of one of our firefighters who tragically died trying to rescue a young boy who had gone missing whilst swimming. We are now not allowed to enter the water (which we use to do on a regular basis) without the water rescue team. Whatever part you played Phylis, well done. People will do some crazy thinks to save their pets.
  3. A body has been found on Wednesday morning in the Rochdale Canal near Ducie Street in the centre of Manchester. I was talking to a boater on Wednesday and they mentioned that the Police knocked on a boat that had been moored near by to ask if they had heard anything over night. Apparently they hadn't heard a thing. It has been repoted in the press but I'm to sure how to provide a link, hopefully someone can do it for me. I understand that bodies have been recovered from this stretch before.
  4. Just voted, great project. Do you think Adrian would come up to Manchester with the boat and help clean up the Rochdale? If anybody else knows of good projects like this that people can volunteer to help with in their local area, it would be great to post them on here. Well done java script:add_smilie("","smid_31")
  5. Cris, Really sorry to hear about the fire, it must have been very frightening for you and your wife. You where very lucky and owe your son one for saving your life. As a water squirter I have seen the devastation that a fire can cause and how people can become trapped very easily when disorientated by smoke. As you say you can attempt to tackle the fire if it’s safe to do so, but it would assist the fire service to find the location quickly if we boaters knew our location on the cut and the nearest access point to the canal (even when cruising). This would a great help to the fire service in locating the scene as the canal is not a location they will be familiar with. Just as a reminder to everyone, you can contact the fire service for a free fire risk assessment for your boat. They will give advice on smoke detector location etc. Obviously it can’t stop attacks of arson but will give ideas on maintaining your means of escape from the boat. I hope you find a suitable new home and eventually recover from your ordeal.
  6. The dangers of jumping ino canals. I like his quote after he left the water At 18.31hrs on the Saturday 20 June 2009 a passerby observed a man in his twenties jumping off Warburton High Level Toll Bridge into the Manchester Ship Canal. Concerned for his safety he rang 999 which sparked a major search and rescue operation involving all three Emergency Services. Fire crews from Sale and Altrincham Fire Stations rushed to the scene along with a Water Rescue Boat from Eccles Fire Station. On arriving at the scene the Fire Service instigated a thorough search and rescue operation with the Water Rescue Boat being launched into the canal to commence a thorough search of the water. The Police Helicopter with a thermal imaging camera was also used to assist with the search and rescue operation from overhead. After almost two hours of searching the area, up and down stream from Warburton Bridge, a different witness to the incident came forward, explaining that she had seen a man in his twenties shortly after 1830hrs come out of the water dripping wet saying ‘I wouldn’t advise jumping off the bridge it really hurts’. At this point he and a colleague drove off in their car. The passerby managed to obtain the registration number of the car and was able to give this to the Police. When the Police were able to ascertain that this man was the person originally seen by the first passerby, the search and rescue operation was called off. It cannot be stressed that this irresponsible act by this individual has not only wasted the Fire, Police and Ambulance valuable time, but could have so easily ended in tragedy for the individual. There are many reasons why people should avoid swimming in open water. There is no supervision such as lifeguards should you get into trouble. The water is often a lot colder than people expect and it can impact on peoples physical capabilities. Just because you can swim well in warm water does not mean you will be able to swim well in cold water. It can be deep and it can be difficult to estimate the depth before you get in Often people can’t find a suitable place to get out of the water. If the water is polluted then it can make you ill. There is no way of knowing what lies beneath the water surface, shopping trolleys, cars, bikes, open tin cans, broken bottles are all examples of what have been found in the past. Swimming in open water courses is extremely dangerous so stay out and avoid swimming in rivers, canals and lakes.
  7. Not sure about summer time but in winter the lock from Diglis basin to the river Severn is locked shut by the lock keeper at about 6 in the evening. If this is the case I doubt you'll make the Severn on time. Don't forget the life jackets for the Severn and have a great trip.
  8. We moored in Chester City centre in February and had no trouble at all. There are some mooring points at the base of the city wall but with no other boats there in February these looked a little isolated so we moored before them just before the Navigation pub ( I think that was what it was called) behind Mecca Bingo. Chester City centre is well worth a visit.
  9. Terry, Have you considered joining a share scheme? You can get access to the canals throughout the year depending on the size of your share, then sell the share prior to buying your new boat. This gives you an idea if retirement to the cut is for you and also may give you ideas as to the final layout of your boat. Good luck
  10. Hi Pete, I was talking to a chap in Uppermill who has a narrowboat last week about passage through the tunnel. He said its better driving through yourself as when they towed boats through they were lose so recieved some damage. He also said that BW have carried out work inside the tunnel during the winter chipping off the the sides of the tunnel causing the damage. Apparently the chap who runs the trip boat in Uppermill was the first self piloted boat through and has been through a few times since. may be worth speaking to him if you're coming through from that side. BW staff come with you but you pilot your own boat. The entrance looks small from the towpath. Good luck
  11. As bargemast says some fire brigades aren't very good with boats on fire especially if they don't have a lot of water in their area. Put too much water in and you sink the boat, not enough and you lose the boat anyway. Usually by the time they have found the boat and got close enough to attack the fire the boat may be lost. The risk of explosion and drowning add to the problem. They are pretty good with ship fires and get the training for that. Also they wound't take offence if you offered some advice about the ropes having been burnt through.
  12. Crime will continue to pay for as long as we don't stand up to it. Its your call whether you ID him or not and I can understand your reservations. The're not all the Krays and he could just admit to the offence before going to court. This conning b*****d will continue to rip people off until someone has the balls to stand up to him. My 87 year old disabled mother was conned by two bogus workmen last week stole her wedding ring and other stuff (which wasn't worth much only sentimental to her) now she's worried all the time. The Police were great with her when they arrived. I'm sure they will die a slow death when it comes.
  13. Hi Geoff, I take it that the visit to the stadium of screams is because these children have committed some heinous crime and you are punishing them.
  14. 'bag 'o' bones' I wasn't suggesting you would leave smelly clothes lying about a boat I was just having a dig at students in general having paid for two. Although I did notice even your own dad wouldn't let you use his boat
  15. Rent your beloved boat to a student! are you mad? It would be sunk, on fire or full of unwashed smelly clothes within the week......... I know I've got a student son leaching of me at the moment. He says he will pay me back someday
