  2. everyone OK with taking out their gas bottles and putting them back during the examination?

  5. Your right Im afraid. Many new washing machines (and other white goods) use PCB’s and ‘Thyristors’ for ‘soft start’ motors and controlling other operations. There are three main types of generator that you will come across: 1. AVR controlled – very good voltage/frequency control, tend to be on more expensive or heavier installed type generators 2. Capacitor controlled – not very good voltage/frequency control. Tend to be on cheaper generators, typically the type with a tubular frame around an open petrol engine. 3. Inverter generators – quite good voltage/frequency control, tend to be on smaller compact ‘handbag’ generators. Some useable some not. It’s not easy, it is one of those things where what is a good arrangement for you may not suit someone else.
  6. Yes I agree. Several generators (especially little ones) are actually low voltage alternators and invertor combinations to deliver a PCB controlled output, hence some petrol ‘hand bag’ generators are more useful if less rugged and durable than big diesels. We have a 6kw diesel unit aboard. Hence my enquiry about the make of the 6.5 kva unit mentioned in the post above.
  7. what generator do you have please?
  8. Thank you - this is all very useful Thank you - Do you have a model number?
  9. I’m sure that this has probably been done before but here it is anyway. I need to change our washing machine which normally runs from a generator (5kw) Im looking for reports from other forum users who run a full size washing machine from a generator as to what make and model they have that works well without stalling due to sensitive electronics. (I understand the issues, thyristors etc etc - I just want info on actual recent makes and models that folk have good experience with on generators please) Many thanks
  10. When is someone representing you and I going to ask BW/CRT WHYdid the canal breach? Its not enough to blame the very heavy rain, the bank at Croxton didn’t suddenly get closer to the water level, The T&M wasn’t the only contour canal section to receive unusual amounts of added rain and run off during those few days. I’m not opportunistically BW/CRT kicking, but Bettisfield was put down to badger sets in the banks and Lymm to Rabbit warrens, could this be a failure to maintain or a failure to run off sufficient water?
  11. We are not going to Braunston this year, I think we will be at Northwich.
  12. I commented to the consultation and received an email from the PR company saying that BW intends to make the drydock and wet dock available below Hunts lock, however they have missed the point that these sites have been used by private boats in recent years anyway and that the site has foot access only with no road access as it is on a island in the river and a road bridge would be prohibitively expensive. I have told them this in return to their response, however I fear that they may not be listening. Has anyone else sent in any comments and had this response from them?

  14. Its not often that the spindle seal goes. Check the throttle/stop housing holding down bolts are not loose or that the bonded (glued) conection between the idle damper screw boss is not broken. The that fact it slows when warm is consistent with a gasket leek where the Alloy body expands when getting up to running temp.
  15. like so many nautical terms I think it depends on where you are or what your circumstances are but my understanding is that an 'Dead light' is any heavy galzed item (not window) that is not opening - thus it is 'dead'. A quick seach reveals both of the below: deadlight [ˈdɛdˌlaɪt] n 1. (Transport / Nautical Terms) Nautical a. a bull's-eye let into the deck or hull of a vessel to admit light to a cabin b. a shutter of wood or metal for sealing off a porthole or cabin window 2. (Fine Arts & Visual Arts / Architecture) a skylight designed not to be opened dead·light (ddlt) n. 1. Nautical a. A strong shutter or plate fastened over a ship's porthole or cabin window in stormy weather. b. A thick window set in a ship's side or deck. 2. A skylight constructed so that it cannot be opened. with a deadlight becoming a porthole when it can be opened - thus not 'Dead' and only a porthole when it can be opened which would be when not at sea and so when in port.
  16. Mike Carter – www.marinesurveysltd.co.uk He was brought up on a royalty pair and owns his own big Northwich, he is used a lot by historic narrowboat owners including the museums.
  17. Its not just about the compressor efficiency If you look at the fridge body then the Bosch grade A has far more insulation which I am guessing is how it obtains its A rating. It is possible to get the current sensing master volt inverter which is demand sensed and so hyper efficient for the mains fridge. All in all the good quality inverter and good quality mains fridge is a more economical to run option although about 20% more expensive to buy. I have lived on boats and with and without land power for 20+ years and without for the last 10 and we have found the 240v fridge option a far more efficient set up.
  18. I cant work out if you are arguing because you like to see your name in print or if you actually believe the rubbish that you keep putting across. For your sake I hope it is the former as it has less potential to damage the waterways for the rest of us. Please slow down and think before you make such sill statements.
  19. I agree with you, this is BW's plan and many nieve boaters will fall for it!!
  20. You are right, however when they purchased thier wide boats they were not expecting to be charged a premium for less simply because BW is aware that if they can split oaters up to argue with each other then they will manage to achive somtyhing thistime and then they will turn on the the shorter boats saying why should they pay less than the longer boats all narrowboats at one fee? We must all be careful, some of us have seen this sort of thing from BW before.
