  1. Hi Darren, Yes I do remember meeting you and your kids, think it was the morning after i saw your Dad. I hope your guys arn't too upset about "Achilles". My wife Bev was with me when we met you and has Facebook so I'll have a look on that. keep us posted on how things get on. All the best Neil..
  2. Hi Darren, We visited the Medway earlier this year and when we got to Tonbridge we moored up next to your dad on "Achilles", we had a chat with him and another chap on the cruiser nearby, he told me a bit about "Achilles" and the work he was doing on it. I was very sad to see your post and wish you all the best in refloating her and repairing the damage. Neil..
  3. Actually if the Caraboat is used as intended, short periods in the water the bearings only require the same maintanance as any boat trailer thats a strip and repack once a year, and my Caraboat is still operating with the original hitch after 40 years, also the caraboat hitch folds up neatly whilst cruising whereas the sealander seems to stick out at the front rather like the Creighton Gull don,t think thats ideal around other boats, and as you say poorly equipped neil m
  4. My son is on the Lytham crew and was on this rescue, the crew and local fishermen know it as the Douglas, though Ben said he has heard the coastguard refer to it as the Asland so maybe its known as that on the Southport side, The station manager told me overheating narrowboats happen on the link as crews tend to go flat out once out onto the river, pushing against the strong current must overheat the skin tank on some boats, This crew got their anchor down, when they hit problems, others have ended up on a sandbank and listing when the tide goes out, and there has been a battle to stop them sinking when it comes back in. I have done it and think the majority cross with no problems though so don't be put off. neil m
  5. I used to own a Creighton 20 which was basicly the front end of the centre cockpit 28 with a outboard engine, it was a great boat really thick grp structure, sadly in 2003 whilst on a trip on the system having come through the ribble link she was stolen at Preston brook and set on fire, incredilby she still refused to sink and was towed back to the Marina there with all the topsides gone and sadly craned into a skip. As you can imagine we were very upset, I learned that they were built by a man called Creighton Ball in the old tram sheds in Nelson, he started making folding caravans and i have seen some touring caravans as well, they also made a caraboat called a Creighton Gull, there is a great pathe newsreel clip on youtube showing it though i not sure any survive in this country but we have seen pictures of one in America. The boats had an alluminium tag in the cabin with numbers on which showed the date built. i will try and post a link to the youtube clip, All the best with your boat, I'm sure you won't have any osmosis problems with a Creighton. 6. Hi There. Just to add after the trailboat festival there was a change of heart and the slipway was left in,I have used it each year to launch "Helterskelter" for a trip up there when i have been helping out on "Waterwitch" for a Bank Holiday weekend etc, I figured if someone was using it more likely it would be kept. Also since the programme was made the trust and WRG have been digging out from Stainton where the water ended, to the next bridge and hope to extend further in the future, The main aim is to get the canal back to Kendal which would be great.
  7. Hi Kienik Congratulations on the sale of "Mirage" and I hope the new owners enjoy owning her, and Brian enjoys his new Narrowboat, can you tell them about the Caraboat forum as we have information on Caraboats and footage of "Mirage" also with so few boats left we need to try and keep in touch with each other, bye for now neil m
  8. Hi There Just to add this boat "Mirage" was featured on the programme Waterworld some years ago, Also there was an article in Canal& Riverboat written by Andy Talbot about caraboats featuring "Mirage" (Feb 2004). Reading that prompted me to buy mine, and sell my Freeman. They are just great, and IMHO greatly undervalued, we keep ours ashore, and go where we want to, not tied to any canal, navigation authority or country, we sometimes use it as a caravan on land. best of luck with the sale, neilm
  9. As a Trailboater we have launched at a few BW Marinas and always found the staff very helpfull. But last season on our local canal the Lancaster we found BWML had changed the locks at Galgate services, and unless you are a marina berth holder you had to pay about £25 for a key. and the lock would be changed yearly,we also noticed the perm moorings were half empty and not that many boats on the visitor either. I sent an email to BWML to ask why the change and wondered how many keys they had sold. I also pointed out that local pubs and shops can rely on boat trade to stay in buisness, I did get a reply but no real reason apart from that they could. on talking to local boaters it seems all the perm boats were asked to move while they revamped the moorings after what looked like to me some minor repairs they asked them back, and only a few came, most had found better elsewhere. I'm glad they are not running my buisness and hope CART arn't relying on them for much profit, I can see why their neighbours may have a problem. Neil
  10. Hi there, I have a Caraboat which i refitted from an empty shell and now trail around the system, I also use it as a caravan at times, they are just brilliant, There are a few common problems which can be easily overcome, The best place for info is the Caraboat website, I can't see a post on there from you, remember you will have to be a member to post on that site. I saw your boat on e bay a number of months ago and it did look in need of a lot of tlc. I also have some pictures of your boat from the early eighties on the broads, let me know if you would like me to send them to you. I will be at the IWA campaign rally at Preston on the Aug bank hol with my boat if you want to meet me. bye for now, Neil..
