  1. hmmm i totally agree - i was sure that he'd recommended the whale! and spoke about it being accessible must re-read.
  2. I'm not 100% sure if resurrecting this dead post is better than starting a new one or not.. Anyhow. I have at new to me 1996 Peter Nichols which is all original and which i love - except the bathroom. It's not my first boat and I have the advantage of working for Dan Cluett - at Cluett Carpentry whom are a boat and home re-fitters. I've been asking about wetrooms - we don't do a lot of them at work, mostly because they clients find them too expensive. So on my prompting Dan wrote a blog post about how one would DIY a wetroom. I've put the link below and was hoping some of the more experienced of you might do me the favour of reading it over and offering me your opinion? Has we covered the basics or missed anything critical that deserves a mention? Our goal for the blog and this post is to offer a starting point or thinking points for those who want to DIY their boats - not a" step by step how to" - because You Tube already has it all! Please let me know what you think! DIY wet room - thoughts and tips about the whys and why nots..
  3. i've got ruhbarb chard sprouting!! its about a cm tall. I've also got, basil, dill, marjoram, garlic, thyme, sage. I've just planted both carrot and beetroot seeds so Fingers crossed in 2-3 weeks they'll come up. Last week we harvested dandylion heads to make wine and leaves for salad. I've never "foraged" before so it was exciting. I also tried nettle (with suitable gloves) and that I blanched and added to brown rice and chesnut mushrooms. I'm on the lea and just about to go up the stort where if I am lucky I will be for cherry and elder flower picking. ps. I have to say there have been a number of "stort boats" by recently and I'm feeling a bit like the poor cousin. what with my mismatched paint work where the new doors and hatch are.
  4. i've just realised that i have a simillar issue with the bed. although not black yet!! I have purchased a roll of rubberised coir to cut to size which should allow the ventilation. i chose it based on the description from another boater as to swhat she had (course looking rubberised pubes in a matt) is what she claimed it looked like, and that it was used in the ychat industry) FINGERS CROSSED i've got the right stuff. otherwise, back to the drawing board.
  5. day 2: I've freed one corner..but its not breaking the rest of the seal. I've already called the marina to see about them doing the rest. They didn't answer. (it is sunday I shouldn't be surprised I guess). So discouraged.
  6. i'm still trying to remove my window - i started this at 10am it is now 5pm. I've been around all but the bottom but its now budging at all. I.AM.SO.FRUSTRATED. The windows were done by the previous owner and he did a good job. They're thoroughly sealed (except where they're not) ARGH. It seems everyone around me is enjoying the sun and water and I am sweating and struggling. GRRR.
  7. in short, yes. (although I am not qualified or knowlegeable enough to explain) when i had my stove fit, the simple way the man in the yard explained it was "to be within regulations, basically not near enough to anything for the stove or its pipe to burn / scorch etc., any other bit of the boat." although there is undoubtibly more to it.. as i wasn't doing the work it was sufficient for me to know only that.
  8. I've been thinking about my next kitchen and I really like a thing called "Birds Beak" shelving supports. apparently its an old carpentry style with notches that let shelves slide in and out. No holes.. no ugly supports. err, thanks to Martha Stewart can't seem to find a pic i can use. sorry.
  9. I went in in the winter, with my phone in my pocket. When i came out i had a missed call. I bought a jacket from a relatvely unknown but talented cycle wear designer named Andy Ellis - the Brand he called FGL or Fixed Gear London. I believe he's selling up and moving stateside shortly. It may be worth a poke about the internet as I can't imagine he'll be keeping his stock. When I was there he had, Bright Cyan Blue, (which I bought) Bright Yellow and I think Red left.. the blacks and Greys sold to the cycling people. oh and my two pence regarding foot wear - is about your socks. I have a pair of SEAL SKIN water proof socks - not cheap but 5 years on and still water tight and its amazing how I've abused them.
  10. thank you all for your comments. I can certainly see that this may look like a wind up / troll thing, its not. I was completely baffled by the offer. In fairness, I still am, however I am inclined to say no for a number of reasons - not the least of which is that I am a relative newbie to the boat community having only onboard since last October. I took the decision to buy and live on a boat knowing no one truly involved in this life. So I really don't know anynone particularly well! (although I have met some remarkable and lovely people) The offer could very well be a stitch up - although the gent who is a boater does seem honest enough. As luck and research would have it I got Miracle, tiny and cheap, but also in nearly prestine original condition, she was the weekend boat to two very committed learned owners. Boating life has a massive learning curve, as you all already know, and I am JUST starting to get the hang of it. So my boat is "priceless" in the sense that I have the luxury of learning at a slow pace about what needs doing. Would I feel comfortable selling her for silly money? Perhaps, since I'd pointed out he could buy any number of boats on his budget. But probably not. If I was truly ready to handle a bigger boat, its bigger expenses and bigger potential issues, it would be different. Right now, I'm content knowing my little boat, its little expenses and it's potentially little issues. When the olympics started I happened to see two lovely, stunning trad boats coming down the lea. When they stopped at the locks I spoke to the owners. When I mentioned wishing I could have such a luxurious boat myself the nice lady told me I had to wait until I was her age. She's probably right, although I wouldn't have guessed she was more than 10 years ahead of me. Its hard to say, boating seems to keep people looking a lot younger ps. i would never hand over keys and papers before the money cleared... and about the police / boat stash, that's just scary!
  11. Yesterday, quite by surprise a gentleman whom another boater knows well offered me an excessive amount of money for Miracle. My first reaction was that he was nuts. He was offering me an amount that would easily pay for something moderate in the 30 to 40 ft range. I pointed this out to him, his friend already knowing this agreed with me. He said he didnt care, that Miracle at 20ft was perfect for him. I even offered to find him something else if he was serious. He told me not to dismiss his offer and just to think on it for a few days.. Later his friend came back to me and confirmed he is a cash buyer. Crazy? It is a lot of money, my partner thinks I'm being offered something I should not refuse. I just think this guy should do some research is all. Miracle is nice, but he could get something much bigger with his money. Plus I really like my boat. When it comes time to move it's going to be hard and there's no doubt I wont be getting the sort of cash he's offering.

  13. I just wanted to say that here at Stonebridge in north east london (where us cc'rs have been penned in for Olympics) we have a volunteer one day a week). He is lovely and knowlegable.. at least I think so. He seems properly clued up and even asked me when I was coming back from toilet dumping if the elsan was working properly and when I said it wasnt he offered that he'd rung the maintenance people and greeted them upon their arrival. Aside from opening and closing the electric lock for any and all he's been a pleasure to have around. Likewise the volunteer at Victoria Park prior to Olympic shuffle - who VERY patiently showed me two useful new knots for tying up. My experience has been really positive. Sorry not everyone's has!
  14. very happy mr. stuart! most people voted "do what makes you happy" - i am. and I have every confidence that its going to be great Mr.Kedian has even agreed that I can film the fit.. so that'll be cool. We'll do a timelapse of it. I suspect even some learned boaters may be interested to see it!
