  1. Funniest: 'Morning Flatulence' Most excruciating: 'Wecandonomor'
  2. Thanks for all the replies gentlemen
  3. My 1991 build 40HP Lister LPWS4 engine has just been replaced by a new Canaline 42. There are two issues - I am told by the installer that, although the new engine will rev away quite happily on no load, when in gear it will not go above 1800 rpm, because the drive is over-propped. A bit puzzled, since the old engine with the same prop would happily rev way above 2000 rpm. Secondly, the accelerator cable is 'creeping back', which is said to be due to wear in my Morse control - the new engine requires the cable to pull instead of push to increase revs. Does this sound right?
  4. I've been fretting about this for years! My Lister LPWS4 engine, 1991 build, emits next to no smoke when under load, but blows light blue smoke when idling for any length of time, and clouds of it for a few minutes after being put under load again. Very embarrassing when moored in one spot for a few days, and running the engine every day for a couple of hours to charge the batteries. I had a complete top end overhaul about a year or so ago - no real change. I'm using Morris marine 10-40 oil - would any other oil help the situation? Should I consider a rebuild, given that these engines have a reputation for smoking anyway?
  5. No matter how slowly you were travelling, breaking the ice in the middle of the cut would cause the ice immediately around his moored boat to rub/knock/scrape against his boat. Nothing you could do about it, and he should have had the sense to realise that.
  6. Many thanks Tony, and others who have been helpful. We've just locked down onto the Severn, headed north, so I will try your test later, or when we're back on our Shroppie mooring in a few days time.
  7. Each alternator has its own pulley and belt, the starter battery one with its original poly-v, and the other with twin vee- belts. Not sure about ratios, and it's dark now. Thanks fellas for your input
  8. The original 70amp alternator, now entrusted solely with charging the starter, doesn't have a buzzer, and yes, increasing the revs a little does stop the buzzing and kill the light
  9. Far from a modern engine! Original 1992 Lister 40hp LPWS4. Alternator fitted about 12 yrs ago. As I said, only annoying after hard river work
  10. Thanks for your quick reply. It's the light as well as the buzzer.
  11. My second alternator - retrofitted to deal with my five leisure batteries, has always needed an extra few revs when started from cold, just to get 'excited' and kill the buzzer. Not a problem, but after pushing the engine hard on a river, knocking back the speed to tick over causes the buzzer to come on again - any ideas please?
  12. I get it - you may lack the qualifications to be an art critic, but you feel free to hold forth anyway
  13. Can we please see examples of any art produced by those posters taking the mick?
  14. After seeing their episode on the Shannon Eyre waterway, we booked a week from the same boatyard, on the same boat used in the episode. It was chucking it down when we arrived, so we accepted their offer of a similar broadbeam with a metal canopy over the cruiser stern. A delightful experience on stunning waterways
  15. We've used it a couple of times
  16. I met someone who used an adapted ratchet wrench to help with these tedious handcuffs

  18. Dark, dark, dark. Can't be doing with dark boat interiors!
  19. That new housing development on the right, just before the Timperley railway bridge, headed towards Sale? In another life, in the mid 80's to mid 90's, I managed a business in the old Metal Box factory that stood on that site. The only canal hazard that I can relate is the time when a 40 ft articulated lorry headed for our factory tried to negotiate the towpath road past our site to get around the back so as to unload. He was too high, basically, and when the top of his trailer hit the railway bridge, it brought his rig to a shuddering halt, and the trailer keeled over into the canal, followed swiftly by the cab. Cue one panicking driver, frantically trying to break the windscreen to get out, when, with his cab on its side, all he had to do was stand up.
  20. Ooh let's think for about a nano-second here! Maybe I'm still working, and have to grab what time I have available from work to cruise for a few days or a week or two. Or perhaps I have a medical condition and need to get back for an appointment. Could be there's a family event that I would like to attend. Any of these could limit the time available to me to get to where I need to be. We're not all fancy-free.
  21. Can we have some proof of this 'Torygraph lie' please? A quick Google reveals that the ‘even numbers only’ story was carried by BBC, Sky and ITV News, and by the Mirror, Sun, Leicester Mercury, Stamford Mercury. The Times, Independent, Guardian and Express newspapers, as well as websites www.lincolnshire.co.uk, www.unbound.co.uk, www. criminal-defence-solicitors.com, www.alexandralocksmiths.co.uk, not to mention …. I gave up after that! I even Googled the same thing again, adding the search word 'untrue' - nothing, zilch! Let’s take a random left-wing newspaper quote – the Guardian, 6 August 2015 - ‘It emerged on Wednesday that Leicestershire police piloted an approach in which attempted burglaries at even-numbered houses would be fully investigated, with forensic teams sent – but this would not happen if the victim lived in an odd-numbered house.’ Graham, do you have a hang-up about the Telegraph? Have you read it lately?
  22. Years ago, we spent a few days with friends in their holiday cottage on the west coast of New Zealand. This lovely place was equipped with two large fridges, but one afternoon, one of our Kiwi friends was heard to exclaim 'Who put food in the bloody beer fridge!'
