  1. Horace informed us that... Mr OSS responded thusly... However, even if they’re not talking rubbish the figure offered by Robbo is correct when he stated... Let’s put that into perspective. A 4800Ah battery bank (absolute minimum for this demand) would cost around £3600 and would comprise 40 off 120Ah Batteries. That’s not considering the cost of cables and busbars of course. A 100A charger would cost around £1100. An EU30i genny to power the above charger would cost around £2500 So far we’re well above £8000 for batteries etc The time to recharge the 4800Ah bank from 50% SoC would be between 36 and 48 hours. So you’d only be able to actually use the heating every third day. Other than that it’s a great idea.

  6. Having read and been inspired by a number of posts here (has anyone really read them all?) I've just added a second ecofan in my boat. The first one is on the stove as normal, the second on the worktop in the galley. The stream of hot air from No1 hits No2 warming up its heat sink and causing it to spin. This in turn propels the hot air stream from No1 fan further down the boat to keep the bedroom warm. To be fair, the second airstream it isn't as hot or as powerful as it once was, probably because of the energy extracted to drive the fan, but it's enough. Alignment, of course, is critical and non-believers, who don't have faith and therefore the required dedication, won't put sufficient effort in to get similarly spectacular results. I did try a third fan just inside my back doors to keep my pirate flag fluttering nicely, but I scrapped the idea after it blew my Captain's hat off.

  9. Smileypete's suggestion (long time ago now!) of wiring through a relay is a good one. The microswitch on the pressure switch assembly then only switches relay current, and lasts a lot longer. The other problem I have had with water pump pressure switches is the small hole before the diaphragm becoming blocked. Fixed by running a drill bit through it, either manually or on a drill. I enlarge them a fair bit, to about 3mm. I have gone larger while experimenting, and found that if the hole is larger than 5mm, the pump cab stutter a bit when cutting out. The other way round both these problems is to fit a "Square D" type pressure switch, and bypass the pump's own pressure switch. Bottom line is that a dead pressure switch shouldn't mean a dead pump.

  17. All Webasto, Eber and Mikuni boilers are modulating, cycling is when the coolant quantity is so small and the radiator load so small that the unit is not allowed to works as it should which is to heat the water to temperature and then maintain it using half power. If the heat produced on half power is not dissipated by the load the coolant temperature continues to rise and the unit shuts down its burner and continues to circulate the coolant until such time the returning coolant temperature drops to a level where the burner fires up again, and so the cycle begins again. The latest Webasto evaporator boiler due to be released soon (already available in 24VDC) has more steps in the heat output so should go a long way to reducing cyclings in poorly designed systems. Edit to add tat the above applies only to evaporator heaters and not pressure jet boilers.

  18. Hello everyone, Thank you for all your comments and concern, however diverse in your conclusions about our trip, me and Simon really appreciate it! We have decided to postpone it due to a number of reasons, but thank you all of you for giving us your experience and consideration. I know you guys come from very different boating backgrounds so it was great to get different views on the best way forward. Let's agree to disagree... It's nearly Christmas! Have a lovely boating Christmas and stay warm! Kind regards, Angelique and Simon

  19. I've been up & down the Severn many times & with the Met Office saying minus 12 in Wales & parts of the midlands tonight & Monday night there's no way I would be so stupid as to go out of Gloucester lock at the moment. When this snow starts melting & reaches the Severn in a few days, I certainly wouldn't want to be on the river. As a complete novice, Angelique has heeded the right advice & made the right decision. Leave it at that.

  23. I've recently started stocking Oxbow Newheat (from the same manufacturers of Excel) and I've had lots of good feedback about it with many die hard Excel users now swapping over to the new stuff. It's slightly cheaper too which always goes down well with customers

  40. When the designs for the Cardiff Bay tide barrier were done, using 40,000 inverted Aldi ecofans would have reduced the projects costs by about £3.24B and still produce enough power for the the Cardiff Arms Park electronic flush toilets during the whole first half of the England Wales Six Nations match

  49. I don't believe some of the posters on here actually have Ecofans, otherwise we'd be seeing far more sensible responses. For example, no one has yet suggested what I do with mine in the summer which is to place it on top of the fridge to run off the (free) waste coldness and keep the boat cool. No rewiring nonsense required, and it doesn't go backwards because, rather like a thermos flask which 'just knows' to keep warm things warm and cool things cool, the Ecofan also 'just knows'.
