  1. It is a matter of whether pets are more important than other human beings. Your point about babies and disabled people fails because they are humans. Ducks are wild animals that can fly or swim in and out, so not possible to ban them. So that just leaves pets. If other boaters want to have pets that remain within their boat, then fine (as long as they don’t make undue noise) but they should not be able to roam over other people’s boats or public space. Of course, responsible owners wouldn’t let that happen but unfortunately most owners take the view that their pets are more important than other humans and the little darlings must be allowed to express themselves freely (by shitting and scratching wherever and whenever they feel like it)

  2. I think the problem here is what 'inconveniencing others' means to a dog owner and a non dog owner. I would agree with Nick it is a problem and that a big proportion of dog owners do not know what is an 'inconvenience'. We've been dog owners for 30 years but not for the last 15years as sailing took over. For the past 3 years I have regularly (5 days per week) been to our local nature reserve taking photos of birds (big lens, monopod - like the footy photographers). I walk around for 3 hours or so and get sick of dogs bounding up to me (not on leads) and plastering my legs with muddy paws. "Oh, fido is just playing..." says the owner. Rubbish! My trousers are now plastered in mud. The local dogs have learnt - as they get a smart smack in the face with my monopod - so now dont come near, but my wife spends a lot of time fending these dogs off. I would estimate over half the dogs do this and their owners do not think it a problem. Why should a dog be allowed to jump up and dirty my trousers? Having owned dogs for most of our lives, I am sympathetic with current owners but times have changed. Ok, only a very small sample of UK dogs but typical of so many places. Maybe we should follow the Singapore model, no dogs off leads in public places!!!!

  3. I have a much improved moral fibre nowadays and I am very happy to go along with 'Do I own this' and 'theft is theft'. The caveat I should have probably added was that 'salvaging' only ever happened to boats that were sunk, derelict or both and very likely to be broken up or left to rot (this is how Museums got some of their exhibits back then - including complete boats). I would say that generally MABEL and FORGET ME NOT could easily be seen by most people to fall into this category but 'salvaging' is no longer something I would condone and I was trying to state what went on back then rather than make light of it now edit = and what goes around comes around as I have had all sorts taken off my boats over the years (shafts, lines, chimneys, a Klaxon horn e.t.c.), all by other boaters even though my boats were clearly still in service - and I do not expect this to change anytime soon.

  12. Don't Les Allen and Ernie Thomas (of Hatherton fame) deserve a mention here ................?? Extract from Allen history........................................... When the working boat trade died in the 1960's the family continued to repair boats finally moving into building steel boats as the leisure boat industry was born. This industry is today well established but when the Allen's started it was very much a new industry. Boat owners and customers of the Allen's in those days had to be capable of looking after themselves and many of todays appliances/services just were not available. So the yard grew up with a customer base that was mainly the self fit out brigade. Thus some of the first boats had crude but honest fit outs many of which have stood the test of time. But whatever the standard of the fit out the hull/shell of the boat was always first class. Many boats have since been re fitted that makes the quality of the shells stand out. One wonders just how many of todays boat builders products will stand the test of time. The boats of this era were always built with two motto's used at the yard in mind...... Great Les Allen quotes below especially the last one!! "If God had intended boats to be made of fibre glass he would have made fibre glass trees". "There is only one reason to paint a boat, that's to knock it off using the thing" "Why put fenders all around your boat after we have spent hours putting solid metal rubbing strakes all around the boat".

  13. I think it's probably fairer to say that GRP was an economy alternative to wooden cabins which were time consuming (therefore expensive) to build. The upmarket early builders (Allen, Braine, Cooper et al) had no truck with pre-fab fibreglass cabins and stayed with timber construction until steel cabins became more popular. In the early days (up to the mid seventies) steel cabins were unpopular due to the lack of suitable insulation, possibly due to the poor reputation of the Yarwoods cabins amongst boatmen. The first Allens boat built with a steel cabin was in 1971, but plenty more were built after that with wooden tops. I have letters from 1971 relating to the conversion of my own boat at Malcom Braine's yard where the idea of a 3mm steel cabin was mooted, but both Malcolm and my grandfather were concerned about insulation and the decision was made to stick with pine t&g and masonite. Interestingly though, the coachroof was skinned with a fibreglass mat scrim and a layer of gelcoat which kept the masonite in good order and didn't leak in the 25 years or so it was on there for. With hindsight, I suppose we should be grateful no one took a leaf out of BR's book and used blue asbestos in narrowboats! Anglo-Welsh and Rugby Boatbuilders cabins were done in a different way to the SUC/Teddesley ones. They used pre made (and insulated) panels about 8 feet long (from memory) and each side and the roof panel were seperate sections dropped onto cabin frames. This had a big advantage when the steerer discovered the biggest weakness of fibreglass cabin - bridge holes - but meant that they were much more prone to leaking as there were many joints. The BW hire fleets used to keep panels in stock and you could often find a Rugby Boat in the drydock at Hillmorton Yard having one of the roof and or first sections of the cabin replaced. The Harborough ones (also run by BW) faird better as they were lower, and had the bridge guards. In the end, the Rugby built boats run by BW out of Nantwich had bridge guards fitted in an effort to ensure that they came out of the other side of Harecastle without extra ventilation. It did make getting off the fore end rather hazardous though.

We have a Cello tv - 19 inch I think, with built in dvd player, freeview and it records to a usb stick, never had a problem using it on 12 volt whilst cruising (be aware some sellers don't provide a 12 volt power supply with it though ours came with both 12 and 240 volt adaptors). Bought for £150 last year so not really that expensive. A great little set except for that the sound is crap. I eventually plugged a bluetooth transmitter into the headphone socket and use it with a separate speaker.

  15. No, you completely miss the point. My contention was that some (most) dog owners consider their animals more important than other human beings. I am a human being and if I chose to spend money on gliding rather than the starving hordes it is because I consider myself more important than those other human beings. Selfish, yes, but at least I don’t have an anthropomorphised dog to fritter money on just so it can shit it out on other people’s property.

  17. I would also think that with the 3 or more sections it was ease of handling not all the outlets for these things had mech handling. It was at that time an infant industry & a lot of set ups were 1man bands or 3/4 man at best 4 guys could manhandle the sections no bother + the sections would with padding fit on top of each other & fit on the back of the std flat back truck of the day one long section would have required special handling/truck=increased cost& at that time company's in that line of work were operating on coin profit not large wads of the folding stuff leisure boating at that time was for small numbers of enthusiasts "chunttering"up/down the cut in more or less anything that floated, pontoon conversions ex ships lifeboats & the array of small 20'ish GRP cruisers look at photos from the mid60's early 70's the all steel NB was a rarity or a non event in the main the only metal hulls were ex working craft At that time the I want to buy & live on a boat on the canal bubble had not burst I stopped boating full time in 72 but have had around a weeks boating with a 10 year gap "tween" each week the cut now 2015 was the last time I boated bears no resemblance to the way it was when I left in 72 the whole package for want of a better word has changed so it is only right to expect the requirements of today's boat users are different

IIRC the bow /stern sections were around 12' long & either 1std length /reduced length or multiple centre lengths were used they had a around a 1" flange that was drilled & bolted together with SS nuts & bolts I have come across an odd one that had self tappers holding the sections together also with ordinary ferrous fasteners (Say no more) It was hailed as the answer to wood frame ,T&G boards,pitch paper, & tempered masonite built cabins which had been the way to go for conversions to ex working craft I guess you could say it was a good Idea that didn't achieve it's potential for a few reasons

  22. The Mould would usually be made for the longest length of Cabin , a moveable Bulkhead would be used for shorter Cabin lengths. The main problem with the Sealing was that Steel and GRP have different Thermal expansion rates which caused the Fixings(often Roofing/Gutter Bolts!) to be strained, thereby encouraging leaks. GRP had several Raw Material price hikes in the Seventies so it is likely that Steel Construction methods became more economic, and MIG Welders became Cheaper and widely available.

  28. I have yet to see a boat with a letterbox..or a doorstep for that matter? If the marina suspects a new customer is responsible for the abundance of Richards, they might be hoping to shock them out of this behaviour, or to encourage peer pressure.

  29. Theft is theft. The question shouldn't be "Does this belong to anyone?" but should be "Does this belong to me?" If the answer is "No" but it is taken anyway then it is "theft" not "salvage". People who find themselves in the position where they can no longer care for their boats have enough to worry about without thieves taking the last remaining bits that may make it worth saving then others legitimising the theft as "salvage".

  35. Our interior where not bare white grp is cream foam backed vinyl. Our seats are a blue fabric but that will shortly be replaced with brown leather as we fancy a change. It doesn't work out that expensive as there isn't a huge area to recover.

Speaking as a liveaboard dog owner who yesterday cleaned up after someones dog had dumped outside my boat and then ran to its owner as he left the canal side and walked to his car or house way down the street I reckon that its probably a non boaters dog at marches doing it, they usualy are. Anyway it wont effect me because I don't have a sloping forehead, bandy legs and webbed feet so I wont be mooring in the fens.

  37. That's a good move by the marina as peer pressure will probably make the culprits pick up after their dog. Dog owners who moor there won't want to be flung out so will keep and eye on other dog owners and hopefully teach them to be more rsponsible haggis

You will need a VHF radio and someone licensed to use it on the Limehouse to Brentford tideway section Worth checking out the St Pancras Cruising Club web site as they often organise tideway cruises around that time of the year As others have said there are bookable moorings at Little Venice, best book early, there is also bookable overnight moorings at the London Canal Museum at Kings Cross. Otherwise mooring between Little Venice and Limehouse is very much pot luck as is the Lower River Lea. Limehouse Visitor moorings are 24 hour but BWML are doing there best to reduce the number of them and to make it difficult to moor If you have the time do the newly reopened Bow Back River loops, the locks at City Mill and Carpenters Road need pre-booking. Also if you have the time do the Rivers Lea and Stort, the Stort is particularly pretty. Tim

  42. Not aimed at either of you, but it's not how long you've been boating, but how much have learnt! I know folks who have been boating that long but show all the signs of not having learnt much passed their first year or so. But still, they can be nice people and that's what we want. James
