  2. Last time we stopped in Burton it was horrid. Cruising gently on a hot day towards Shobnall Fields, we were rudely yelled at , "MAATTTTYYYYYY" and forced to pull over and moor by a group of itinerant boaters. We said we could only stop for two hours and walked to the local Lidl for provisions. The nasty bunch of boaters then refused to let us leave, forced a BBQ on us and wouldn't even let us go to bed before nightfall, strumming awful versions of smoke on the water and Paranoid until the early hours. Added.a day to the Leicester ring and they wouldn't even give us paracetamol next morning. Cheers.

  3. SWMBO's first job featured a guy called Richard Dyer. He had a bit of an estuary accent and would answer his phone "Dick Dyer 'ere."

  4. "Pricey" ? Have you seen the amount of kit and tlc needed to get you up and down? Despite the moans and groans about unreliability, it represents great value for money, especially when "free" of charge.

  12. To add to the evidence I know three people from Burton. They are called Adrian, Alan and Mark. A couple of them are even integrated in to society enough to have partners. Although one of them is Irish so is a foreigner. I also have a friend Ian lives nearby. He can't speak a word of his native tongue. He's Welsh. I wouldn't let him leave the country until he learns. I dunno what the world is coming to. JP

  13. Indeed. Outside the marina is fine, mooring on Shobnall Fields more of a gamble. Many people do and get away with it, but it's on the walking route from two housing estates to the town centre, so there's always a risk of problems at the weekend. In addition, the park is a trading area for the local pimps and pushers. Boats have been attacked there on several occasions to my knowledge, either with stones and lumps of concrete or, once, with a twelve foot iron bar. With the choice of Alrewas, Barton Turns and Branston one way and Willington the other, we would never stop in Burton for a night out.

  21. Bear in mind to get the full maps and functionality for offline usage it requires quite a large download. Also can be a bit of a palaver to get the main map data onto a sdcard although it is worth it in the long run. Just to add a thought, which I hadn't researched yet it may be possible to share the raw map data between the 2 applications. I am fairly sure this is possible with the vector and open source maps but I suspect not the paid for OS maps

  27. I suspect that it is just chucked into the waste bins which is a bit antisocial. What if the poo bag bursts when someone throws something on top or when the bin is being emptied. Disgusting! haggis Posted at the same time as Alan.Must type quicker :-)

  28. One answer to the question (which was posted on this very forum) was that it was quite legal to 'chuck it into C&RTs waste bins'. Not sure that I'd like to be the operator at the other end 'sorting' thru it all - surely there are 'health / infection/ disease transmission questions' to be asked - and - at what 'state' or time period does it go from being unacceptable to acceptable, and where do you store it until it reaches the 'acceptable' stage ? Primitive !!!

  32. Anyway, back on the subject, just passed through Hawkesbury / Sutton stop, coming from Nuneaton direction. On arrival, not too busy just one waiting boat in front of the pub and one waiting our side of the roving bridge, a boat coming out around the corner for which I waited before the narrows (and received no acknowledgement of my existence from). As we entered the narrows (first boat having gone into the lock, everyone moving up as you do) up pops a volockie asking me to tie up on the bollards just before the bridge. Well tbh I don't do "tying up" under those circumstances, I just float around, but anyway I have to say I was a bit irritated - I didn't come onto the cut to have some volunteer telling me the bleedin' obvious. I know there are some idiots around who just pile in and cause gridlock, but IMO one should be allowed to do the sensible thing, only be given "instructions" if it's clear you aren't going to. Actually he was quite a pleasant chap and I did feel slightly guilty after I said to him "what would we do without you?" Like, for the past But then again, he obviously liked controlling people and wasn't helping with the actual locking at all.

  43. Take my time, I love the water, I love the smell of diesel, piloting a boat is fun and I seem to be a natural, I can handle situations like loss of reverse without freezing up, the tools we built to hook on to the bank for solo worked, a 20ft is too small for us, Most GRP we saw on the canal (at least 20 passed us during that time) were petrol, canal convoys are fun and the community is fun, enjoyed sleeping on a boat, enjoyed cooking bacon and eggs, our cool bag worked fine, waking up at 5am and seeing hares/rabbits playing on the canal path was beautiful. I love locks. Paola can get on a boat, Paola can deal with the movement, A toilet I can pull my pants up in without stepping outside into the cabin would be a bonus, I enjoy mooring. But as for how to avoid it again, pay abit more than 4k for a boat :), find a marina with a boat yard and recommended people who know boats, buy a boat with a warranty, take my time, research.

  45. I expect you'll be hoping you never come up behind me then because that's how I do it too. Not one click at a time but definitely no more than half way at first and then possibly winding back down a bit briefly if it seems necessary. I do this because I am thinking about it, not because I'm not. And because my wife is fed up with having the boat move backwards and forwards repeatedly and crashing into the lock gates and I'm fed up with her revving like crazy to try and stop it. Once things settle down a bit I'll open both. I doubt if this adds more than a couple of minutes. If those two minutes are that important to the boater behind me then I can't help thinking they have chosen the wrong method of transportation.

  46. Actually when he opened both paddles the boat lurched back them forward and bashed into the gate.
