  4. So do I. Pleased with mine. Got it from B&Q last time they were doing a buy one get one free offer. Assuming the op is going to paint it herself, then I would point out that it you are painting outdoors the paint will pick up a fair bit of dust and insects (depending upon wind and time of year) also the drying rate outdoors will vary from slow (so more time wet collecting dust) to very fast which tends to leave a few brush marks. If you choose a good spot to paint in, then the boat will look fine when finished from a few feet away, but close up and you will see the defects. So what I am saying is if you are planing to paint it yourself on the canal tow path then there is not much point buying expensive paint with a very high gloss. I painted mine myself, and used Dulux weathershield and I am happy with it.

  5. I live alone most of the time and have a mains microwave on my boat which I use quite a lot. I eat well and find it very useful. I use it for cooking things like sweet potatoes in a few minutes, cooking frozen fish (usually better quality than so called "fresh fish") and for reheating pouches of wholegrain rice in 2 minutes. Saves on cooking brown rice and washing up. I don't know where this idea comes from that if you use a microwave you're eating crap food? Some people need to wake up to the 21st century. But I'd only ever use the microwave from shore power, never from the inverter/batteries.

  9. Yes ludicrous. That would be the equivalent of somewhere like, say, Belgium attempting to make good beer wouldn't it!

  10. UPDATE: I've had a response from the NW office of English Heritage. There are no current Scheduled Monument Consents for Marple Aqueduct. The last one was for the mounting of a plaque by CRT in March 2016.

  12. I can certainly imagine the surface water outfall being much worse for corrosion than the canal water. Firstly, the water coming from the outfall could be much more oxygenated than the canal water the rest of the boat is sitting in. Secondly, it could be contaminated with all sorts of things picked up from running over the land.

  19. Anyone else, ahem, repaired car bodywork with duck tape and then coloured it in with appropriately coloured marker pen?

  21. Don't be fooled into thinking a BSS gives you anything - except that it is unlikely to 'blow up' on you. A BSS does NOT mean : It will not sink There is no damp The toilet works There is no water leak in the plumbing The engine starts The engine actually runs The gearbox works There is a propeller There is no holes in the bottom / side / roof The fire works The Co alarm works The smoke detector works and so on and so on. The BSS purely means that it is not a risk to any 3rd party (you can kill yourself if you want to) I simply view the BSS as a piece of paper you don't have to worry about for the next 4 years.

  22. Dave, I dunno what's wrong with your profile. Sure, you have strong opinions and aren't afraid to express them. However, you can be persuaded to change your mind, or come to a compromise position, and I have never known you to "play the man" rather than the argument I think you'd make an excellent mod.

  23. Not my profile as in what you see when you click on my name. Rather more the fact that I maintain a high profile and have strong views that I am not afraid to express. I can see that I am too controversial to be a mod, and that the last thing Dan wants is people on the team with too independent a viewpoint.

  24. My 'primary' forum is an International forum based on a small subset of militaria collectables, covering values of items from a 'few pounds' to many, many thousands of pounds. It is 'populated' by adults with (presumably) similar outlooks in life, and I cannot think of more than a couple of examples of moderation in the many years I have been a member. The forum has 7 simple rules : 1) No 'wanted to buy', 'wanted to sell', or 'wanted to trade' adverts are allowed on the main forum - use the sub-forum. 2) No flames or personal attacks will be tolerated. Posts that either attack or flame will be deleted and the IP of the poster noted. If it is noticed that one poster is causing problems this poster will be banned from posting for one week. Second offense results in the loss of posting rights for good. 3) You do not have to register but it is recommended as it allows you to upload files as well as access some features not available to "anonymous" posters. 4) Please do not use foul language. If the use of foul language is noticed the entire posting will be deleted. KEEP IT CLEAN. 5) Do not answer or praise yourself with false handles or nicknames. This is noted when it happens and is frowned upon by xxxxxxxxx.Com. 6) Do not post of ongoing auctions. You may post when auctions are completed but no mention or promoting of auction items is allowed. 7) Treat others with the same respect as you expect to have others treat you with. That's it. Having too many, complicated rules means that more moderation is needed and more opportunity for 'wrong decisions'. Keep it simple. I dare to suggest that CWDF could operate with three rules : 1) No flames or personal attacks will be tolerated. Posts that either attack or flame will be deleted and the IP of the poster noted. If it is noticed that one poster is causing problems this poster will be banned from posting for one week. Second offense results in the loss of posting rights for good. 2) Please do not use foul language. If the use of foul language is noticed the entire posting will be deleted. KEEP IT CLEAN. 3) Treat others with the same respect as you expect to have others treat you with.
